Guys, I got a call earlier from Lawrence Academy (Mass.) 2017 four-star running back AJ Dillon that he was offered today by Notre Dame. Dillon is one of Virginia Tech's most recent offers, that coming last Wednesday.
Dillon now has 10 offers, including from Maryland, Syracuse, Virginia and Boston College. Assistant coach Zohn Burden made the offer for the Hokies and Dillon said he called Burden last week when the offer came. Dillon said their conversation was fairly brief and was simply "getting to know each other."
With VT overall, it's still a little early. Dillon said he's always been aware of the Hokies, going back to when Michael Vick was there. Dillon told me, "They're always good, competitive in the ACC and nationally. That’s a great program and I look forward to getting to know them more and the staff there."
But honestly, everything changed in Dillon's recruitment when Notre Dame offered today. Dillon is a legacy, as his grandfather, Thom Gatewood, who was recently elected into the college football hall of fame, last year, played at Notre Dame. Dillon told me, "Having my grandfather there, playing there, it’s been a part of my life since before I played football. I don’t think it’s sunk in, but it’s really nice to get that offer." Dillon said that's a unique place to get football and academics and he went to two games this season, both road games, when ND played at UVA and BC.
We'll see how this one plays out, but Dillon hasn't visited and the odds went waaaay down when Notre Dame offered. That's the odds on favorite now. If Dillon visits this spring or summer (no visits planned now), that could change things, but I'll be surprised if he's not an Irish by May, when he hopes to commit.
