I would imagine this is for recruiting. He can say "don't worry about the bad year, I still have job security" when he goes into homes. However, until we see that the buyout from Pitt's end also increased (which I don't expect), it's ultimately meaningless.
In fact, every embattled coach should be lobbying administration for more years/lower buyout in a win/win negotiation to aid recruiting.
