I believe CFB was effective in closing the deal when he went to see recruits. However, he was hardly ever the "Lead Recruiter" for the recruits. It appears this is all different now, in that the HC MUST be an effective "Lead Recruiter", for the higher ranked recruits. How does a HC manage this vast time investment, and still run a team, keep a family together, and make the public appearances needed to support the school. We are often critical of recruiting, but there is more to it than meets the eye.
