Guys, I spoke earlier with a newer basketball recruit on the radar for VT in 2017, Dakota (Mich.) three-star guard Jermaine Jackson. He's the son of former NBA player Jermaine "JJ" Jackson, who played with the Raptors, Hawks, Knicks and Bucks, as well as overseas and is now an assistant coach at Detroit Mercy. Jackson's uncle is former NBA star Jerry Stackhouse.
The younger Jackson is being looked at and recruited by assistant coach Jamie McNeilly. He made a trip up to see Jackson a few weeks ago. Jackson currently has nine offers, most notably from DePaul, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, SMU, Auburn and Northwestern. The Hokies have not offered yet, but my guess is that could come soon.
The only visit Jackson has made since the school year started was to Pittsburgh in November when Detroit played there. But that was mostly for the game. Jackson has also visited Michigan numerous times because of proximity, but there is familiarity there, too. The one school that really seems to have caught his eye, though, is SMU. Larry Brown coached his dad and there's even more familiarity there. Jackson said he is considering Detroit, but that his dad has basically let him do his own thing and hasn't tried to push him there.
With VT, Jackson said that McNeilly "texts me all the time." The game that McNeilly was on hand for, Jackson had a game-high 29 points. He said McNeilly has also told him that he's his favorite point guard. Jackson hopes to get down over the next couple of months for a visit, but it hasn't happened yet and Jackson isn't sure when it will happen.
The thing I really like about Jackson is he seems to have good character. Comes from a big background, in which he's been around the NBA a lot, hears from Stackhouse, Jamal Crawford and a few other players pretty often and has really noticed what it takes to win. Jackson also reads to elementary school children three days a week, which I liked hearing.
Keep an eye on this one.
