The tailback chose the Hokies over South Carolina, North Carolina, Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, NC State, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, West Virginia, and others.

Stocky with speed, moves and hands!

We lost the 5-star instate RB to Penn State, and had to fight like hell against bottom dweller programs for a very average 3 star RB that no decent program wanted. That is the state of VT program now. Fuentes cannot coach and cannot recruit. Tell me again why he was such a hot commodity 3 years ago?

He had over 40 offers and chose VA Tech. That means something to most people that follow college football.

Yeah we lost a 5 star RB to Penn State so we just get over it.

This is a rebuilding year and next year and thereafter you will see Fuentes's recruits come through.

The key word in your comment is 'rebuilding' year. There was a time that we were not rebuilding, we were reloading year after year during Beamer's heydays. Those days are gone now that we are only landing 3-4 top tier athletes a year, which means that when they leave (and they usually leave early) we don't have replacements of that quality to immediately fill in and we go into rebuilding year. Our program is slowly becoming irrelevant.....pretty much like what happened to Miami.

I'm not sure where you think we use to get a tone of high star talent. For years the broadcasters always boasted Beamer and staff as doing more with less. We would get a few but not a lot.

Beamer is the reason our recruiting went down. After Tyrod, our recruiting prowess took a hit because of Beamers decision to keep Stinespring on as OC for over a decade, then hire an inept new OC in Lefty while still keeping the old OC on staff. This is Beamers doing and his decision in his final 5 years as coach dramatically took the program into a turn towards mediocrity. We severed recruiting ties in VA from about 2004 through 2014 because of our inept offense. It will take 5 years to 7 years for Fu and staff to get that back. Many don't realize how bad off our program was regarding recruiting when Beamer left compared to the late 90s through mid 2000s.

Your blaming of Fu is misplaced. We shouldn't have been as good as we have been the last 3 years and it's only because Fu and staff have done a miraculous job.

In 2001, we were an elite program and when Bustle left, we could have got a proven OC. Beamer hired Stiney. In 2007 after 3 years of offenses ranked outside of 100th in America and fans complaining, Beamer decided to keep Stiney on as OC. That decision coupled with hiring Lefty about 5-6 years later and again, keeping Stiney on staff beside him changed our program for a good decade. Those 3 decisions over the years by Beamer were so important that we are feeling it's effects today in recruiting in VA .

IMO we're heading in the right direction.

We seem to be getting good offensive linemen early on and in recent years past we got them late in the year. It all starts with the line.

APPO I have to agree. Losing Ricky Bustle was the start. I use to love the play where we would fake the toss and hand off to the fullback. It always got good yardage. When he left it left.

Big Daddy Hokie, agree the direction is positive. Our offensive line recruiting is what if was around the turn of the century and it all starts up front. We also have done pretty dang good at WR as WR took a horrific recruiting turn under Stiney. We need an elite (high 4 star or 5 star) QB and an elite high 4 star or 5 star RB like a Jones or Suggs. We are going to get there

Lake Erie, remember the old play action and post route to the fullback. Remember the Gator Bowl and Clemson with Vick to Ferguson. I think our OC and Coach Fu (an offensive guy) is light years ahead of the ole crew offensively. Our talent right now, at this very week on the field is equal to 1992 talent regarding recruiting standards. One thing though, many of our 3 star commits last year, this year, and the incoming 2019 class are "high 3s." There are many near miss 4 stars that may have been a four star by 2005 recruiting service standards.

This is the worst VT team in 27 years. Mediocre offense, terrible defense, and below average special teams.
Worse, but also younger... much younger. Youngest team I've ever seen. Not a good combination with Bud's complex defensive schemes and the 3 straight "veteran" college teams we've played (21 year olds versus 18 year olds).
