I've talked a lot about how prospects often tell me VT isn't one of the programs showing the most attention... but almost to a man, that was the case in defensive backfield. A staff that's pretty good at identifying and offering simply must improve at the phases of recruitment leading up to closing the deal:

Certainly other factors (on-field success - and the staff's ability to divert attention away from the on-field product) play a role here, but almost every other Power-5 schools seems to manage to figure it out. There has to be a happy medium in being aspirational in terms of who you want to land, and who you can realistically land. The staff tends to go for a lot in the first category, and a lot of lower-hanging fruit in the latter, and doesn't divide recruiting resources appropriately between them - and also doesn't spend enough time on what should be the biggest group, the guys who fall into both cateegories.
