He wanted this kept quiet until after he made the decommitment official: he's already set up a visit to Blacksburg for the weekend right before the dead period begins (Dec. 15 - dead period begins that Monday). He has also seen Ohio State this Fall - that one was another surprise, and not publicized until he hit campus back in mid-November.
From the coaches' end, it's more a contingency plan in case VT loses Jordan McFadden - but given how that seems pretty likely at this point, Culver would actually be an upgrade (in rankings if nothing else). He's higher priority than Josh Jefferson, Cam Goode's teammate who has seemed like a lock for an offer if the Hokies were to lose Jefferson.
It'd be unfair to say VT leads at this point, so don't view this as an immediate commitment if McFadden bolts. Still, the opportunity in Blacksburg is one that he's definitely paying attention to. The visit should tell the story - especially since McFadden plans to make his "final decision" before that.
