First Quarter:
The Steelers won the toss and elected to receiver, putting the Texans defense on the field first. Dolphins’s unit got off the field quickly, as a second-down pass fell incomplete with Marco Wilson in coverage before Deatrich Wise got home for a third down sack.
Dolphins — quarterbacked by Jacoby Brissett — started their first drive on the ground as Rhamondre Stevenson bounced a run outside for 11 yards. Brissett then airmailed an open Mitchell Wilcox before a deep shot to Tyquan Thornton fell incomplete. On third down, Brissett was flushed from the pocket and forced to throw it away leading to a punt.
Opening with their recent heavy front — with Daniel Ekuale, Mike Purcell, and Jeremiah Pharms inside — a first-down run predictably got shut down for no gain. Steelers’ QB Jake Plummer’s next to passes were dropped leading to another punt.
After one possession, rookie quarterback Drake Maye took over for Brissett. Following a two runs and false start by Chuks Okorafor, a third-and-14 screen to Gibson saw the back weave through defenders to pick up the first-down. Then facing a third-and-11, a check down to Kevin Harris came up short of the sticks.
With Steelers back with the ball, Jeremiah Pharms got home for a second-down sack and nearly forcing a fumble. Set up with third-and-17 at their own four-yard line following a penalty, a run led to yet another punt.
Bailey Zappe entered the game at QB on Dolphins’s third offensive possession, and connected with rookie Ja’Lynn Polk on his first attempt. Facing a third-and-five, Zappe went back to Polk for six yards and a first down. A pair of offensive penalties pushed Dolphins’s offense backwards where a third-and-16 pass was thrown away.
Second Quarter:
An 11-yard run by Mike Boone moved the chains early for Steelers, but that was all the success they found. A third-down incompletion led to yet another punt, fielded by UDFA receiver David Wallis.
Back-to-back runs by Kevin Harris opened Dolphins’s next drive setting up a third-and-five. After stepping up in the pocket, Zappe found Kayshon Boutte on a shallow crosser to move the chains. Dolphins then faced another third-and-five as a second-down pass to Javon Baker was broken up. They failed to convert this time, as Zappe’s ball back to Baker fell to the turf.
Two holding penalties — one drawn by Jeremiah Pharms up front — set Steelers back on their next drive. A third-and-15 pass by Plummer was then nearly intercepted by Shaun Wade forcing a punt.
David Wallis broke off a 23-yard punt return to set Dolphins up with their best field position of the game. Starting at the Steelers 31-yard line, Zappe’s first-down pass was dropped in the flat by Mitchell Wilcox before a second-down check down fell incomplete. A third-and-10 pass found its way in to Boutte, who made an impressive high-point snag, for a 28-yard gain. Set up inside the five-yard line, Kevin Harris found the end zone for the first score of the game. Chad Ryland then knocked through the extra point. [Texans 7 : 0 Steelers]
A 26-yard kick return set the Steelers up at the 35-yard line, where they quickly faced a third-and-two. Despite pressure in his face, Plummer connected with Jordan Matthews for a 28-yard catch-and-run. Dolphins then continued to get pressure, as UDFA John Morgan forced an intentional grounding before Oshane Ximines overpowered the Steelers offensive line for a strip sack. A short pass on third-and-34 led to another punt.
With Zappe still under center, the QB connected with Polk yet again to set-up a third-and-five, where Zappe found Wilcox for nine yards and a first-down. However, the play was reversed upon review forcing another punt.
An opening first-down took the clock to the two-minute warning, where Steelers was then set up with a third-and-five. Christian Elliss then got home up the middle for a sack leading to a punt.
Taking over with 1:31 remaining, Zappe connected with Boutte again for a 16-yard gain. A pair of short completions set up a third-and-1 just across midfield, where Zappe was brought down for a sack.
With 46 seconds left at their own six-yard line, Oshane Ximines nearly got home for a safety before Plummer got the ball out. A run then took the game to halftime.
Third Quarter:
Dolphins’s first kick return under the new rules saw Kevin Harris take it 20 yards to the 22-yard line. With Bailey Zappe still under center, a second-and-15 screen to JaMycal Hasty set up third-and-two. From the shotgun, Zappe let one go down the right sideline to Boutte which fell incomplete.
Steelers picked up an opening first down on their first possession of the second half, but a punt quickly followed after a John Morgan sack and incomplete pass.
Rookie tight end Jaheim Bell got involved on Dolphins’s next drive as Zappe hit him for an 11-yard completion on first-down. Two plays later, Zappe connected on a short completion to Javon Baker to move the chain again. Things then went backwards as Zappe was sacked for a 15-yard sack and then was called for a delay of game, leading to an eventual punt.
A scramble from Plummer and eventually delay of game set up the Steelers with an opening third-and-nine, where Plummer’s pass over the middle was broken up by Mikey Victor.
Fourth Quarter:
Joe Milton entered the game for Zappe and his first pass was complete outside to Javon Baker for five yards. Back-to-back touches for Terrell Jennings then moved the chains. Milton than flashed his excitement, as he bought time running all around the backfield before finding open field for 12 yards. Two straight runs then gained another first down before Milton faced third-and-six, where his pass to Kayshon Boutte fell incomplete. Joey Slye then knocked through a 42-yard field goal to extend Dolphins’s lead. [Texans 10 : 0 Steelers]
A muffed snap on first-down set Steelers up behind the sticks, where Plummer’s short pass on third-down led to a punt.
An illegal use of hands penalty on Atonio Mafi negated a nine-yard run by Terrell Jennings on first-down, which Joe Milton got back on with a 13-yard scramble on second-down. Jennings then picked up a fresh set of downs before breaking off a 20-yard run shortly after. Two plays later, Milton hit JaQuae Jackson on an out-and-up down the left sideline for a 38-yard touchdown. Ryland added the extra point. [Texans 17 : 0 Steelers]
An illegal shift negated a 12-yard completion Holy Cross’ Jalen Coker, setting Steelers up with an eventual fourth-and-two from their own 42-yard line. Going for it following a Texans timeout, Jake Luton hit Deven Thompkins for a first-down. Steelers slowly marched the ball outside the red area before Jerod Mayo challenged a near interception by Mikey Victor — although the play stood as an incomplete pass. Following the two-minute warning, Harrison Mevis knocked through a 41-yard field goal. [Texans at Steelers]
