Recruiting A look at the near-term future of the 2024 class's ranking...

Within a couple weeks, this could be a top-30 class, and of course if the Hokies close on other top targets, it only gets better from there.

INSIDE INSIDE The Tunnel: July 3, 2023

Assuming things don't go sideways with the Hokies' upcoming decision schedule (and I don't expect they do), a couple key pieces of the class should be in the boat soon:

July 6: Chanz Wiggins
July 13: Keylen Adams

(I think Troy Stevenson picks Georgia Tech July 9, and Alex Taylor won't be an option come July 29 because the Hokies will have moved along with a couple other top-flight wideouts in the fold, and one more that they're waiting on - about which more in a moment).

So what happens from there?

Mekhai White doesn't have a decision date set in stone yet, but is expecting to make his choice before his season begins in late August. Even if the Hokies win out for Wiggins and Adams, I think there's room for him. It's an interesting case, since colleges (including the likes of Georgia) have seemed to have him highest on the board, but the rankings and perhaps even the Hokies' staff ranks him behind the other pair of in-state guys. If they do both pick Virginia Tech, I would bet he firms up a commitment date in short order: either he wants to secure his spot in the class, or the filling-out of the Hokies' wide receiver group pushes him toward Maryland, the other program near the top of his list.

He's always been high on Virginia Tech, and while he sometimes is the sort of nice kid who tells people what he thinks they want to hear (he's let staffs from multiple colleges believe that he was ready to pick them in the past, for example), the Hokies have been at or near the top even as other programs were rumored to be No. 1. How that survives through a changing numbers situation in Blacksburg as the staff fills out its wide receiver room is unknowable - even White probably doesn't quite know how he would/will react to a class with two WRs in it.

Like White, Cole is a kid who wants to make a summer decision, but hasn't settled on a date yet. Over the four open weekends in June, he took official visits to Penn State, VT, Georgia, and Miami, in that order. The Hokies and Bulldogs have long been considered the favorites, and it seems like Cole sort of favors the Bulldogs. The issue for UGa - if you can even call it that - is a class that may not have a ton of room. Georgia already has four-star Damarcus Riddick in the fold, and it's been no secret that the top player in Virginia, Kristopher Jones, is trending in the Dawgs' way, as well. With 22 pledges already on board, and Jones potentially making No. 23... is there scholarship space (both overall and at the LB position) for even a guy who's a top-150 player nationally? Possibly not (must be nice to be a Bulldogs fan, to be honest).

Should Georgia run out of space, it makes Virginia Tech the obvious choice, right? That would follow logically, though I would certainly expect Cole to step back and take an overview of his recruitment, and possibly take another official visit somewhere in the final weekend of July when the window briefly reopens. But given that he has wanted to be committed by the time his season begins, it would be a positive for the Orange and Maroon - maybe more like a silver lining for missing him - if Jones takes that spot in Athens. In the end, Cole likely extends recruitment into Fall.

And what's the deal on offensive line? With three commitments already on-board - depending on how you classify Andrew Hanchuk - the staff wants at least one more.

Peach State three-star Web Davidson seems the top option at this stage. While there are other players on the board (Keyonte Arrington and Isaac Cannizzaro visited during June, for example), Davidson's trip to Blacksburg in mid-June seemed to be mutually beneficial in terms of building his bond with VT and vice versa. He's not clear of the field to the extent that he'd have right of first refusal before any offensive lineman commits, but there's still something to be said for turning away Moritz Schmoranzer (poor Mo: turned away by VT twice in the span of four months) because there are options out there the staff likes more. With the three guys already in the fold, this is a position group the staff can be selective with.

I'll skim past DT, since I haven't gotten a feel for where Eric Mensah stands after his official visit.

Will the Hokies take another defensive back, even with four in the fold (and some of them positionally versatile, but as it stands, three corners and one safety)? In the grand scheme, I don't know if they will. But I do think there's a specific kid they'd take: Minnesota commit Zahir Rainer.

Rainer picked the Gophers over VT and others in early June, and while it wasn't an upset by the time the commitment happened (Minny had trended for a little while), early in the class he had felt like one of the most obvious shoo-ins for the Hokies in the 2024 cycle. That doesn't mean all is lost when you don't land him - and heck, it doesn't even mean he comes completely off the board. I've talked regularly about how important Trinity Episcopal is to the Hokies' longer-term plans in the state, and WRs coach Fontel Mines's relationship with TES assistant coach (and recruiting coordinator) Wali Rainer is a big piece of that. Landing Rainer's son would go a long way toward firming up those connections!

Rainer's younger brother Khalid, a 2027 CB/Ath, camped at Virginia Tech for the final session in June, and the family was in tow. Our Minnesota site reached out to me to ask if the Hokies had any sort of feel for the elder Rainer (an indication that the Minnesota coaching staff is at least a little worried), and while the Hokies aren't going to push right now, knowing that they have connections to work if they do want to make Zahir a priority before the end of the cycle is a positive. I would keep an eye on him for now, even if the recruitment is not going to be toward the front-burner at any point soon.

INSIDE Fantastic Friday? Picks for an important decision day

Tomorrow, three players will announce college commitments, with Virginia Tech among the finalists (and another, offensive lineman Kahlil House, technically has VT in the running, but will pick from programs that he took officials to in June, and that doesn't include a stop in Blacksburg). There's a crucial one the following day too - that might have an impact on one of tomorrow's. Will the Orange and Maroon win out with each of them? My predictions are in...

Highland Springs (Va.) cornerback Noah Jenkins (4 p.m.)

Jenkins's recruitment has also been a bit of a weird one, not because of tons of twists and turns or a rising and fading star in terms of who wanted him... but rather because the endpoint has seemed obvious for a little while, and he's moved around his commitment date with seemingly nothing changing in his process. He had planned a commitment in March, and that would have been a pledge to Virginia Tech. He then set a date for July 4, only took an official to VT, and bumped his timeline up to tomorrow while he was still on campus for that visit. In the end, nothing has changed in my view, and I won't be taking my futurecast off the Hokies, to say the least.

From a playstyle perspective, he's a slightly bigger, perhaps a little smoother version of current commit Joshua Clarke. Because of his size, he could project more readily to safety, but because of the ability to fluidly change directions with that size, it still makes sense to give him a shot at corner. He's even versatile enough that growing into a hybrid player isn't out of the question as his body develops. His senior year will be extremely intriguing to monitor in terms of how he's going to fill out both from a physical and skillset perspective.

Midlothian (Va.) Manchester defensive end Makai Byerson (4 p.m.)

Byerson's recruitment has been fairly straightforward: Virginia Tech has been on top for most of it, and the plurality of his campus visits have been to Blacksburg, including the final one this past weekend. However, it has also seemed throughout like the Hokies weren't in a hurry to see him commit, and in the process, his dad's alma mater (Brad Byerson played hoops at West Virginia) became more serious about recruiting him, and he also took official visits to Rutgers and Kentucky. If the Hokies didn't feel so good about Johnson at this stage (both from an attainability perspective and in terms of talent), I think they'd still be pushing to land Byerson. As it stands, I think they've made the choice to let him go elsewhere for numbers reasons.

Byerson is a more-developed version of Johnson, but also one with a bit less of a high ceiling (unless he can get heavy enough to hold up on the interior). He's a nice player, and frankly one that the previous coaching staff may have worked to have committed right now, rather than letting it play out the way it has. He's OK with edge explosiveness, but it would be more notable from the interior. Two similar players, one not quite as explosive? That's not slight to Byerson, but rather an endorsement of Johnson, imo. And a fair conclusion.

Roanoke (Va.) North Cross School offensive lineman Moritz Schmoranzer (6:30 p.m.)

This is perhaps the toughest pick of the bunch but not for a similar reason that any of the others would be. Simply put, Schmoranzer's favorite has long been Virginia Tech, and the question in his mind has been whether the feeling is reciprocated from the Hokies. He'd planned to make a commitment between VT and Wake Forest in May, but pushed back when he didn't feel that his choice (the Hokies) would take a pledge from him. He expanded the list to include Miami, Pitt, and West Virginia - eliminating Wake Forest in the process - and took officials to each of his finalists. It seems like the two that he wanted most in May are no longer the strongest options, but the Hokies have filled out the OL room a bit and can perhaps aim for a more finished product (Schmoranzer was a wide receiver as a sophomore(!)) with any remaining spots. If they change their mind about that later, there may be a chance to make another late run at the native of Germany, even if I project that they don't the first time through. It's also totally up in the air for potential changes if the staff gives him warm-fuzzy feelings in the next 24 hours.

As for the player... the recent conversion from WR tells the story: he's a good athlete with a long, lean frame (this seems to be fairly typical of Deutschlanders who try to head to the US to finish their college ball) but one who has a lot to learn about the nuances of offensive line play, and a lot of filling-out to do. That's not to say he can't do it, but his connections to Virginia Tech (not only location, but also the fact that 2023 signee Hannes Hammer is also a German who played at North Cross School - that's a solid mentor for a kid's college career in another country, should Schmoranzer end up a Hokie) could mean that the staff has the chance to make a run if and only if they see the correct developmental milestones.

Virginia Beach Cox defensive lineman Gerard Johnson (1 p.m. - Saturday)

Johnson's recruitment was sort of a weird one. He was relatively quiet for months, though he did manage to make a number of stops at UVa and one at Virginia Tech before announcing those were his final two... in advance of his official visit to Blacksburg over the weekend. The Hoos have long been considered the top option here, but rumblings around the Merryman Center (and importantly - among the commits in VT's 2024 class) are that the Hokies did enough to make up the ground over the weekend. I've placed my FutureCast in favor of the Orange and Maroon.

Johnson is a big-bodied defensive end who likely grows into a strongside anchor at the next level. He's got solid pass-rushing skills but doesn't have the immediate burst to be a pure terror around the edge. If he can become a fully-rounded version of that, he's a great complement to Deric Dandy, who is of the "basically a linebacker" body type at the high school level. There are sites that have him as the top player in the state, and I'm extremely skeptical of that (to the point of almost calling it credibility-destroying), but he may be underrated as a 5.6 three-star.

INSIDE Keenan Jackson (and more)

Jackson has set the time for his announcement today: 3 p.m.

The three-star WR out of the Charlotte area has a group of six finalists, but really only UNC, NC State, and Virginia Tech are seriously in the mix. App State, Duke, and Maryland are the others, and didn't draw official visits from him. At this stage, I lean toward his staying home. That's not because of a lack of love for VT: despite being a little farther from home and of course out-of-state, he saw VT as much as he saw either of those programs (heck, as much as he saw both of them combined in the past two years).

I think it's simply a matter of seeing where he fits into the pecking order and going to the program that he - perhaps accurately - views as wanting him more badly. He's a nice prospect, but the two-in-the-bush status of more-highly ranked guys who can make a statement about VT's intent and ability to land guys from the Commonwealth just means that the Hokies didn't need to push him unless Jackson wanted to wait it out a bit.

HOWEVER - and here's the more interesting insider bit - I'm told that the coaching staff is still expecting good news today. Maybe it's simply a surprise decision to push for Jackson at the last second, but the nature of the communication leads me to believe that's not it. The info has been passed along a little cryptically, so I'm not positive of precisely who will be bringing the good news to the Hokies - though if you've been following along, you certainly have a couple good ideas in mind. Think guys who are top targets and took June officials and are not sticking to established timelines.

More to come later today, of course.
