***INsider: Tylin Oden Latest***

Guys, I spoke earlier with Spring Hill (Tenn.) four-star quarterback Tylin Oden, who camped at and threw at Virginia Tech's camp July 26. Oden has been committed to Louisville since May. He said that is still the case, but he's opened up his recruitment a bit.

So far, Oden said the three who have reached out and communicated with him are VT, Oregon and Florida. He visited the Hokies first. That was also his first visit to Blacksburg. Oden said he enjoyed the visit and he liked the honesty of assistant coach Scot Loeffler. Oden said it was a bit different working with Loeffler because Loeffler wanted him to be faster with his feet. But Oden liked the camp and thought he did well. He wants to major in chemical engineering and likes the "makeup" and "landscape" of VT.

We had heard and southeast analyst Woody Wommack had posted here after the camp, that it was likely Oden would get an offer from the Hokies. But that offer hasn't come. VT is still trying to decide if it wants another QB, to go with three-star commit Josh Jackson. That said, no offer has come yet.

Oden visited Oregon just over two weeks ago and said he loved the pace of the offense, as well as the coaching staff. He liked the facilities and said he loved what they do with quarterbacks.

Oden had planned on camping at Florida the Friday before the Hokies' camp. But he cancelled that visit, as travel plans fell through. Still, the Gators remain in contention. But one big reason Oden is still with Louisville is that none of the other three schools mentioned have offered. Each are evaluating where they stand with quarterbacks and also waiting to see how Oden plays to start his senior season.

No visits are planned right now, though Oden said he wants to take all five. He said as of now, Louisville, VT, Oregon and Florida would be the three to get visits. But he's waiting to see if others get in the mix.

Ahmed Hill Has Surgery

Guys, in case you missed it, this was released last night, but big blow to VT basketball. Sophomore Ahmed Hill will miss some time after undergoing surgery. Full release from VT:

Virginia Tech men’s basketball student-athlete Ahmed Hill underwent successful surgery on his left leg on Tuesday afternoon, August 11. The surgery was performed by Dr. Tony McPherron at LewisGale Montgomery Hospital.

Hill, a rising sophomore from Augusta, Georgia, suffered a partial tear to the patella tendon in his left leg during individual workouts earlier this month. Following further evaluations, it was decided that surgery would be needed. No timetable has been set for his return to the court, but he is expected to miss all preseason conditioning activities.

Hill appeared in all 33 games as a freshman for the Hokies in the 2014-15 season, making a team-high 30 starts. He averaged 8.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Welcome Jimmie Taylor to The Hokie Nation!

(He had some impressive suiters!)

By Andy Bitter | The Roanoke Times

The Hokies landed their first defensive end commitment in the 2016 class Sunday from Jimmie Taylor of Jacksonville, North Carolina. Rivals.com was the first to report his decision.

Follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Taylor is a three-star recruit by both Rivals and 247 Sports. Rivals lists him as the No. 27 weak-side defensive end nationally, while 247 Sports has him 45th.

He had more than a dozen offers, including North Carolina, N.C. State, Duke, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida and Michigan. Charley Wiles was Taylor's primary recruiter.

Taylor had 71 tackles, 15.5 sacks and 11 more tackles for a loss as a junior at Southwest Onslow High. Here's his highlight video:

2017 five-star Darnay Holmes..

The five-star CB from Calabasas, Calif., said he plans to attend the Ohio State-Virginia Tech opener and that his family has a connection to the Hokies.

Holmes' father, Darick, and Cornell Brown know each other from their NFL days and Holmes has a lot of respect for what VT does with its defensive backs.

I think Stanford and Ohio State look strongest now but who knows what a visit in that environment could do.

***INsider: Matt Butler Latest***

Guys, I spoke earlier with 2017 Garner (NC) three-star DE Matthew Butler. He was just offered by the Hokies July 27, joining NC State.

Butler said he's heard from and visited Clemson and Georgia Tech. On Friday, he visited Wake Forest and he's also heard from Georgia and North Carolina. It sounds like proximity will be a factor, or at least, he wants a school that's within about six hours or so.

Butler participated in VT's camp on July 26, but the offer came the next day. Butler said he felt he had a good day and also had been in contact for some time with assistant coach Charley Wiles. Because of that, Butler said he "sort of expected" the offer. Butler said the talks have gone on since he had a big game around Thanksgiving last season. On his visit, Butler said he toured VT and liked the welcoming atmosphere. Butler also liked how Wiles and assistant coach Stacy Searels gave him praise and criticism, since each have perspective from opposite sides of the line.

Butler liked his Wake Forest visit, but it sounds like NC State will always be a team to beat, no matter who else offers. Garner is right outside of Raleigh and Butler is close with former four-star RB Nyheim Hines, who signed with the Wolfpack in February. Clemson, though is the offer that Butler said he's especially waiting on.

Long way to go here, but with Butler visiting, the Hokies getting in an early offer should keep them firmly in the running.

Stroman

Beamer hinted that Stroman was going to be working at WR some besides CB. I love it! He is too dangerous a weapon to not try to get the ball in his hands. He got burned a couple times at CB in the spring game and will take time to learn the position, but he is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball NOW. Stroman.....Newsome......McMillian. These are some scary home run threats! It's a shame there's "only one ball to go around," as the saying goes. It will be interesting to see how and if Loeffler is able to get these guys in the game and get the ball in their hands. Ford and Phillips are the more accomplished WR's, but ONCE THE BALL IS IN THEIR HANDS, each of the other three are probably a more serious threat to score. Especially next year, with even more experience, and with Lawson coming in, the athleticism on this offense is going to be as great as I have ever seen it. This also implies that Loeffler will be under the gun to get it done. No more excuses!
