Tunnel Talk: The aftermath of a strong visit weekend

The Hokies hosted a number of top targets in Blacksburg last weekend - and while this weekend's visitors list will be even more impressive, there's plenty to look forward to from those guys who managed to make their way to town shortly after the end of the Dead Period.

While it may seem a bit of a disappointment that the Orange and Maroon didn't land any commitments, I would urge you to not sweat it a bit. For a number of players, the Hokies set the bar. Penn State (the only of his other finalists still seriously recruiting him) would have to impress the hell out of in-state OL Gunner Givens to pull him away from VT at this point. Virginia Tech really made an impression on Ohio TE Charlie Kenrich. The list goes on and on.

And that's not even the most significant part. There are some players who may very well have chosen to commit if they weren't intent on going through a couple more visits to have something to compare to, or if the Hokies had been ready to really push for a pledge.

It was not a coincidence that Highland Springs (Va.) defensive lineman Rashaud Pernell announced the cancellation of his visit to Wake Forest - which had been previously scheduled for this weekend. I hinted at it in the interview I did with him, and he made the news public a couple days later. That said, it's not the whole story: his trip to Winston-Salem had been off for a little while (and the decision to cancel wasn't necessarily one he made against the protestations of the Wake Forest staff). He's still planning to see Minnesota in a couple weeks. But the Hokies' fates after that point are almost certainly in their own hands. If the staff wants to land a commitment from him, they'll know the right buttons to push, and their button-pushin' fingers can be hovering not so far from them.

Another player with whom the visit went a long way is defensive tackle Malachi Madison. The former (and future) Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale standout who played in Georgia for his junior year also had a great trip. As with Pernell, an eventual commitment is probably more about timing and the staff choosing to escalate from "he is a take" to "it is time" to make things happen. Right now, they're very happy sitting in pole position without an urgency to make things happen. It doesn't sound like that will change until they see where things go with upcoming visitors.

Alabama WR Marquarius White is the only guy I haven't received a ton of feedback about. I remain skeptical that an Alabama kid with an offer from the Tide is really going to head to Virginia Tech for his college ball at this point, and that vibe is only enhanced by the low amount of feedback that sources have shared about that visit.

I'll wrap up with a couple of legacy prospects. Tyler Banks - who is a cousin of outgoing LB Rayshard Ashby - was close to committing last Fall, then the staff wasn't sure where it stood on his talent, so things cooled off in a hurry. The fact that he took an official visit indicates they're warming back up to him, but it's unclear to me (and I'll continue digging, of course) just how serious the staff is about him. He's got the profile of a "if he commits on the visit, great, if not, it's a return to the back-burner" style of recruit. The staff is clearly evaluating and pursuing linebacker prospects harder now than they had been even in very recent weeks, so that could open the door a bit.

VT legacy Bryson Jennings has long seemed like a UVa lean, despite his family ties. The Hoos offered first, and although he's the son of former VT tight end Bryan Jennings (also the head coach at Midlothian (Va.) Clover Hill), Virginia had been able to keep up the heat in a way that kept the family high on a school that... wasn't exactly the favorite they felt in their hearts. The twist, of course, is that Jennings has a few characteristics that can obscure how exactly he's feeling at a given time, including but not limited to keeping fairly quiet when it comes to interviews and the like. When your dad is a former NFL player and your high school coach, the dog-and-pony show doesn't really need to be part of the process that you deal with, and Jennings doesn't. The fact that the Hokies feel like they knocked the visit out of the park is good, and particularly when you consider that this staff has done particularly well with legacy prospects, those whose dads are former NFL players, and the sons of coaches... the impression is that a swing strongly in VT's favor is under way. We shall see exactly how strongly when Jennings's visit trail continues.

I'll continue providing interviews with the players who have recently visited in the coming days, but after a couple pretty enlightening conversations, I thought it'd definitely be prudent to give y'all the update that isn't what the prospects themselves have to say directly, too.

Tunnel Talk EXTRA: Receiver has a solid visit

Just chatted with official visitor Jaden Watkins. He asked not to have a front-page story on Rivals (which is weird, because he certainly didn’t have anything scandalous to say) but was fine if I fill you all in

“It went well, I really enjoyed it,” the untangled prospect said of the trip. “The best part was probably getting to see the facility.”

While the Hokies’ coaching staff had high expectations for how his trip would go, there wasn’t much thought that a commitment would come this weekend. And lo, it has come to pass that he will stick to his established visit schedule and not accelerate things.

he has three more official visits over the course of the quiet period in June, and then will take stock of where his process stands.

“I have Duke, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt,” he explained. “Those will be the next three weekends.”

With a Dead Period set to extend through July after that window, he’ll have time to sit back and think about whether he wants to narrow it down to one more school for that fifth visit, prepare for a commitment, or take a step back and see what else arrives in the Fall.

“I really don’t know yet,” he said. “I’ll have to see how I feel then.”

Virginia Tech believes the 6-3, 175-pounder is a diamond in the rough, having earned most of his scholarships in the past couple months. You could still fairly say that they have to see where they stand with other receivers before they begin to feel urgency at the wideout position.

For the time being, they’ve done a good job setting themselves up for a potential push with the Tar Heel State standout.

Tunnel Talk EXTRA: Mathias Barnwell on campus

He couldn't make it Tuesday, but he's made up for it:

Not participating in camp, just visiting. I've long felt like, despite a number of top options, this will likely come down (again) to Penn State - where he'd previously committed - and Virginia Tech. The Hokies are doing the legwork to land one of the top 2023 in-staters.

Tunnel Talk: Visit period opens

I'll have stories with some of the key visitors from yesterday rolling out over the course of today, but wanted to provide a few updates on key visitors. We'll start with the biggest.

Yesterday afternoon, I mentioned that I wasn't sure if Daleville (Va.) Lord Botetourt four-star OL/Ath Gunner Givens had changed his plans for an official. He had been scheduled to take one this weekend, but popping just down I-81 yesterday, only to return a few days later, might not have seemed likely. When he showed up for yesterday's elite visit day, the possibility of pushing back the visit to take a little more time to let things digest and get a second, fresher look at campus was possible.

However, I've confirmed with folks close to Givens that the visit this weekend is still on. That's huge news for the Hokies, including for some of the reasons I mentioned above: there's not much reason from a learning-about-the-program perspective to need visits in such close succession. Making it back to town this weekend (his official was originally supposed to start tomorrow, a day earlier than the typical Friday beginning, but the source indicated that it's on a normal timeframe now) is more about just wanting to be in Blacksburg. For obvious reasons, that's a positive sign in the recruitment of the state's No. 5 player. Making it back for a recruiting visit for the first time in over a year reminded him of a lot of the things he really likes about the program in the first place.

I've been pretty clear that I think the Hokies' continued pursuit as some of his other top programs have scaled back their efforts a little bit is both cause and effect of the same thing: the Hokies are building a lead in his recruitment. I wouldn't say he commits this weekend and cancels his other scheduled official visit (Penn State is the only other program in his final six he's slated to see: the weekend of June 18 is when that'll happen), but I certainly wouldn't rule it out, either. And if that doesn't happen, the approach that VT has taken will make them tough to beat.

Givens also had a chance to bond with another top prospect who'll be back this week.

Flanked by many of his underclassman teammates at Highland Springs (Va.) High School, in-state DE Rashaud Pernell is another who's been trending the Hokies' way for some time. He's also scheduled to return for his official visit along the same schedule as Givens: in just a couple days, immediately on the heels of this unofficial. That some of those teammates either picked up offers (2023 DE/LB Miles Greene) or have made it clear that a VT commitment is probably just a matter of time and seeing the world first (Braylon Johnson) added to the positive vibes for Pernell.

As with Givens, he has one other official visit planned: he's slated to see Minnesota at the end of the month. He's far less-traveled than Givens over the course of the process, and may very well take that trip just to get a little bit of experience on the trail. However, he seems even less likely to take his time with a commitment - and even if he does see a couple of his other favorites (Boston College, Coastal Carolina, and Wake Forest are the other finalists), less likely to see those visits impact the fact that the Hokies have a massive lead.

With a big June on the way, the Hokie coaching staff seems poised to push for (and accept) a commitment from Pernell - a status that has not always been the case during his recruitment, but is well worth it at this point.

One other key visitor came as a bit of a surprise to me, because I'd just talked to him a couple weeks ago, and such a trip wasn't even on his radar.

Midlothian (Va.) Manchester four-star running back Ramon Brown still plans to take his official visit at the end of the month, so taking this unofficial didn't impact whether the Hokies get to host him on a school-paid visit. That's particularly positive since he has seven finalists and can only take officials to five of them. He'll start the official visit trail with West Virginia this weekend.

The trip went a long way with Brown (whose brother, RJ, was on-campus too - RJ holds a Marshall offer, but doesn't seem like a scholarship option for the Hokies any time soon), as well. He's less in the "confirm VT as No. 1" category than Givens and Pernell entered the day with, but shuffling VT to reach the top of his favorites list is possible, and major strides were made in that department, as well. Indeed, getting to spend time with other in-state prospects who are high on VT like those two helped him see some of the value in potentially sticking close to home and starting a trend of top Virginia talent becoming Hokies. That trend has been gone for far too long, as I don't need to tell anyone here.

I still feel like Penn State has the slight edge on Virginia Tech, but things are now setting up well for the Orange and Maroon to make the pass. The other finalists (Kentucky, Maryland, South Carolina, UVa, and West Virginia) will have to truly alter his thought process on visits - always possible - to really alter that overarching status.

Stay tuned today for updates from some of the visitors who made their way to campus, and over the course of the month for much, much more on the developments in Hokies recruiting with an important visit stretch upcoming.
