New Quarterbacks coach should be ...

What's up everybody. First time posting, I've been on here for years. Anyways, You guys remember Brian Randall? He would be a great candidate for QB coach. Kid lit it up in high school and at VA tech in 2004 and 2005, ACC title, and NFL stint. The guy was also one of the smoothest cats ever to play for Tech. He would be a great recruiter. I am thinking we might need someone who actually played QB, to teach the subtleties and nuances of the position, especially a dual threat QB. Thoughts?

INSIDE INSIDE the Tunnel: Hoops coaching?

Obviously nothing will really happen until after the Hokies' season is over, but continuing to hear that VT assistant Kevin Giltner will formally interview for Wofford's coaching job, and the expectation is that he'll be a front-runner if that goes well. Seems like there's been a bit of informal contact already.

Giltner was a four-year letterwinner at Wofford under Mike Young, and an assistant coach after his playing career ended. He headed to Blacksburg as Director of Basketball Operations when Young took the job at VT, and has been an assistant coach the past three years. His obvious connections to Young are significant... but his tie to Young specifically comes through his tie to his alma mater. Young recruited him and has retained him as an assistant at multiple stops, but Wofford is the common thread for Giltner.

IF he were to depart VT, it would not be ideal... but probably the least damaging a loss of any of the Hokies' assistants. Mike Jones and Christian Webster are more-known as tenacious recruiters (and Jones's ties to the DMV region are crucial in that department, as well). Giltner's a solid schemer and practice coach, but perhaps not irreplaceable in either of those respect, either. The players like and respect him, make no mistake. But the development of a coaching tree - losing a guy to a head coaching job at his alma mater is a non-negative way to see some attrition - is a positive.

As for potential replacements, a promotion from within isn't out of the question. It's how Giltner joined the Coaching Staff Proper under Young at both Wofford and VT. Hokie legend Ace Custis has been on the staff the past few years as a special assistant to the head coach, and feels an obvious option if that's the route Young looks to go. The real process of considering candidates will start if and when Giltner indicates he's leaving (no guarantee), which wouldn't take place until the end of the Hokies' NIT run.

Football Hearing...

Staff shuffle on the way. VT will rearrange positions to hire Maryland running backs coach Elijah Brooks. Former DeMatha head coach (that's good!), should really assist with recruiting in the DMV.

Likely means Bowen and Holt share OL/TEs (Holt has been both an RB coach and TE coach in his career, while Bowen played OL in college even though he's been more a TE coach recently). Still expecting - though surprised for no announcement - that Brian Crist gets promoted to QB coach.
