First thing that comes to mind is poor playcalling on first and second down from the Hokies, preventing the offense from getting any sort of rhythm (and making it easier for Syracuse to defend long third downs).
I hate to be "complain about playcalling" guy, because you never know what the coaches' overall plan was, or what they saw on film. But VT was just lighting drive on fire and throwing them away by choosing not to put the team in positions to succeed once it was clear Syracuse was selling out against the run.
