Virginia Tech Hokies basketball preview: Notre Dame 2018, ACC Tournament

Great team, coach and ACC season. Fantastic job.

According to Adam Schefter on SportsCenter. The Bills are so dumb, man (though I assume they'll try to pick up another quarterback rather than try the Nathan Peterman... thing... again).

This morning I had a conference call with Rivals100 offensive tackle Quinn Carroll to discuss his Top 6 released earlier this week and his recruiting plans going forward. The article below has comments from Quinn about why these six and where his recruitment goes from here, including spring visit plans and timeline for a decision:

But, Quinn also spoke specifically about Virginia Tech and I have saved those comments for this board. He talked both about how his brother’s, former Virginia Tech long snapper Collin Carroll, experience in Blacksburg plays into this recruitment, and how his own experiences with the Hokies factor in:

“My brother Collin played for Virginia Tech and it was a great experience for him. Their coaching staff has gone to great lengths to fly to my high school numerous times. We have a great relationship there. They have a different approach (from) some of these other schools. They feel like me, as a recruit, could help their program more than I could help (other schools). Coach Fuente is a great coach, and the same with Coach Vice, the offensive line coach. They are ready to win the ACC and win national titles there.”

We should still be safely in and I'm hoping it's a 10 seed. 8/9 makes it tough for a sweet 16 run and that's what we should be hoping for. We can beat any 7 seed and second round we're going to have to pull an upset no matter what. Hope we learn from this game.

Hokies collapse, lose big lead in loss to Irish

Well, that was a monumental collapse tonight. Probably hurt us as far as a seed in the NCAAs. I think we'll get in but it was something

Things that could happen tonight:
1. Some kid from Notre Dame has a career night scoring.
2. ND shoots lights out from 3.
3. VT gets into foul trouble
4. Poor free throw shooting bites us in the butt.
5. VT’s pace runs a tired ND to death.

My wife is having a baby this afternoon. I will probably be really scarce around here for the rest of the week. I'll definitely be checking in here and there, but won't be around as much as usual.

Not too many relevant games today, but this really gets rolling tomorrow and Wednesday:

Virginia Tech bracketology: March 5, 2018

It's been a rough couple days for the Hokies' RPI. They gave away the game at the end against Miami (not only "what is Justin Robinson doing trying to poke away the ball from behind in that situation?" but also "Why is Chris Clarke launching a 60-foot three-pointer with more than two seconds still on the clock?"), and a lot of other results have gone against them Friday and yesterday.

It's not catastrophic - they should be a tournament lock regardless at this point - but with an RPI of 51, there's still some danger (and certainly a likelihood of a much lower seed than they'd want) without a bit of help going forward.

Radford v. Liberty (1 p.m. ESPN)
The Highlanders need to do anything they can to boost Virginia Tech's RPI, and also earning the Big South championship gives VT a win over a tournament team, still an important criterion in the eyes of the committee. This is a much-needed result, and Radford is a slight favorite here.

Wichita State v. Cincinnati (Noon CBS)
You need Wichita State here, though it's not a hugely important game. They're a non-conference team for Notre Dame, and the Irish could drop out of Quadrant I if a bunch of results don't go well for them in the next couple days (thanks to beating a Pitt team that will likely drag the RPI down slightly and then (hopefully) a loss to the Hokies on Wednesday). You want that risk to be mitigated as much as possible.

Delaware v. Northeastern (6:00 p.m.)
For the same Irish-related reasons as above, you want the Blue Hens to win this one.

Illinois State v. Loyola-Chicago (2:05 p.m. CBS)
Same reasoning, different Hokies common opponent. Ole Miss is on the verge of dropping from Quadrant I to Quadrant II, and you want to avoid that happening by seeing their non-conference opponents do well.

At this point, Iowa is almost certain to drop back into Quadrant IV (but results next week might pop them back up into III), but Ole Miss and Notre Dame are still salvageable, and of course a Radford win has a bit more direct an effect on the Hokies' RPI, which could use some help.

VT offered the Texas DE over the weekend. Sort of an uphill battle for kid well outside their traditional recruiting areas, but the staff is definitely keen on casting a wider geographic net:

Alabama, Ohio State, and Clemson are some he's seemed highest on, but VT obviously has plenty of connections to his area and will likely be one of the other four schools still in the mix.

Can't believe we are having this much discussion during basketball season. Used to be in the not too far off distant past that we all pretty much packed it in until spring football. Wow - what a difference!!!
(Not that we are any where near the likes of Duke, UNC, and yes even Hoos but hey we are almost relevant. How cool is that?)
