INSIDE INSIDE the Tunnel: Brodie eve

Tomorrow evening (he's decided to announce at 6 instead of 3, not a significant change, obviously), the Hokies will get one of the longest-awaited answers for their 2024 recruiting class: will they land the state's No. 3 overall prospect, WR Keylen Adams?

To put it simply, my FutureCast has been locked on the Hokies since his official visit to Blacksburg, and I have no intention of changing it. If I were a little bolder (some may say reckless) with my 'Casts, I probably would have had it in for VT even before that visit based on tea leaves. In the wake of his official, I put it in based on more than just tea leaves.

I've been asked a couple different times whether we should read anything into a bit of confidence from the South Carolina end of things, and after asking around sources in the 757 and the 540, I don't think there's much of anything to worry about. The things Adams has said to certain individuals around his recruiting process don't seem to have changed - and nobody from the Gamecocks' end of things, including our well-placed folks in the media there, has said that he gave any sort of silent commitment or an indication that USCe was his favorite to the coaches in Columbia. It appears to just be a bit of a smokescreen at this stage.

So if VT does win out tomorrow evening, what does that mean for the rest of the recruiting class? Specifically, what does it mean at the WR position, where VT is in good shape for another four-star in Mekhai White - another kid who has not been particularly shy over the past month or so that VT is in outstanding position for him? That will be interesting to monitor. There's no question that Adams and Wiggins have been ahead of White on the staff's priority list for a long time, but there is a question about where the line is drawn in terms of how many receivers they want to land. That can depend on a number of different factors: whether the staff sees Wiggins growing into a TE (they do not at this time, but I'm increasingly talking myself into the concept), how they feel about development and attrition from the current roster (no worries in either department), and how many "best-available" slots are going to be open when all the needs are filled (still an open question and perhaps the most important one).

The staff has been hoping that White would have a longer timeline than the other two - get your top targets on-board, then worry about everything else after that - and at this stage, of course, they're going to get their way. The longer he waits, the better chance they have to see where their bigger recruiting picture fits him in (or if it does). I expressed some skepticism yesterday that they currently see room for all three, but settled on the concept that it'll eventually work out. If nothing else, this staff's in-state reputation has not been repaired enough after the Fuente disaster to be turning away four-stars who want to come. But there are no guarantees at this point, and if they had to make the decision today, it would be a tough one (leaning "no")... but as I just mentioned, today is not when White is making his decision, and by the time he's ready, my prediction (not based on inside info, and in fact the staff might not agree with the prediction at this point) is that there will be a spot waiting for him.

MBB 4-Star Recruit Rakease Passmore

Coach Young extended an offer to 4-star SG Rakease Passmore out of Combine Academy (NC) at the end of May. Passmore was recently a standout at the Pangos All-American camp and one of the most efficient scorers during this past week’s Nike Peach Jam. A truly upper echelon athlete. You can read up on what he brings to the floor in this extensive report, equipped with nearly 80 film clips: Rakease Passmore Eval.

Gamecocks seem confident

A South Carolina Gamecock site popped up on my newsfeed this morning with an article on the expected announcement this week by 4 star Keylen Adams. There were numerous comments from the fanbase accompanying the article. Their tone was very cocky (pardon the pun) regarding their belief Adams will pick South Carolina on Thursday. I guess that sort of confidence is to be expected from an SEC fan base. I hope to enjoy their disappointment when Adams becomes a Hokie instead!

Recruiting From the film room: Aidan Lynch

Popped into the film room to break down the three-star OL commit:

There were a few more weaknesses than I'd realized when I gave it an overview in the past, but they're all things that a college coach is used to working on. Great potential for Lynch in the long run (but maybe a year longer run than I'd initially thought).

Recruiting A couple of our good friends chatting Hokies...

Matthew Hatfield of VirginiaPreps had Rivals National Recruiting Analyst Adam Friedman on his radio show yesterday:

They talk Gerard Johnson, Gabriel Williams, much more. It should play right from where Adam's interview starts (but if not, fast forward to the 10-minute mark).

Hoops Kenny Brooks completes women's hoops staff

From the University:

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women’s basketball Head Coach Kenny Brooks announced the hiring of Jauwan Scaife as assistant coach Thursday.

“I am extremely excited to add Jauwan to our staff,” Brooks said. “He brings energy and a wealth of knowledge that will benefit not just our athletes but the entire staff. He is top notch and a rising star in our profession.”

A native of Muncie, Indiana, Scaife spent the 2022-23 season at Ball State, his alma mater. The Cardinals went 26-9 (14-4 MAC) and competed in the second round of the WNIT.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Hokie family,” Scaife commented. “I am eager to get started and look forward to working alongside this incredible staff led by Coach Brooks.”

Scaife returned to his alma mater after spending two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Utah State women's basketball team. During the 2021-22 season, the Aggies finished the season ranked third in offensive rebounds per game (12.43) and fourth in assists per game (14.20).

Prior to Utah State, Scaife had a similar role at Murray State from 2018 to 2020, where he had key roles in player development, recruiting, offensive schemes and game plans and assisted with in-game adjustments. During the 2018-19 season, Scaife helped the Racers to nine conference victories, the most by Murray State since the 2008-09 season. Scaife also helped Evelyn Adebayo and Macey Turley earn All-Ohio Valley Conference honors.

Before his time at Murray State, Scaife spent the 2017-18 season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Evansville, where he worked primarily with perimeter players. Scaife helped Kerri Gasper earn honorable mention All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades.

Scaife was also an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri for two seasons under Rekha Patterson. At Southeast Missouri State, he helped the Redhawks advance to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for the first time in seven seasons during the 2015-16 campaign. One of his players, Brianna Mitchell, was named to the All-OVC team during his time at Southeast Missouri.

A fantastic player in his own right, Scaife was a four-year letter winner from 2009-2013 at Ball State, where he was a Second-Team All-MAC selection as a senior in 2012-13 and a MAC All-Freshman Team choice in 2009-10. He completed his Master's degree in physical education from Ball State in 2013 while also holding the role of graduate assistant for two years with the Cardinals.

Scaife finished his career 14th in program history with 1,326 career points and became the 26th 1,000-point scorer in Ball State history. He finished with 203 career 3-pointers, breaking the school record in the final game of his career. He ended his career ranked seventh in program history in career minutes played (3,368), tied for seventh in games played (120) and ninth in games started (93). Scaife also wrapped up his career ranked 11th in career free throws made (317), 13th in free throw percentage (.783) and 15th in free throw attempts (405).

Prior to Ball State, Scaife was a three-year letter winner at Muncie Central High School. Scaife is also the cousin of former Ball State and NBA standout Bonzi Wells.

Scaife and his wife Rebecca have a daughter, Jewell.
