Tunnel Talk EXTRA: Jake Kradel winding it down

Ryan Donnelly of our Pitt and Ohio State site caught up with Jake Kradel last week when the three-star offensive lineman was on the verge of announcing his decision date. He took it one further, and released an official to seven from which he'll be choosing June 10.

Kradel has now locked in that decision date, as long as he can wrap up these visits and come to a decision by that point in time, he'll be announcing his commitment June 10. He's hoping to see some of his favorites again before making his college commitment. Pitt and Ohio State (the perceived top two right now) are guaranteed trips, while journeys to Virginia Tech and Maryland are likely. Remember, he picked up his offer from the Hokies on a visit to campus during spring ball, so that whirlwind nature of that visit experience might be one he wants to measure against a slightly less action-packed trip to Blacksburg.

It likely will take that additional visit for VT to land him, but given that he plans on taking one, there's a decent shot here. While the Buckeyes and hometown Panthers are considered favorites right now, it's unclear if OSU would be willing to accept a commitment. That leaves the Hokies fending off Pitt and recent thorn-in-side Maryland, most likely.

As always, stay tuned for more on his recruitment. I'll let all of you know as soon as he locks in the dates for those visits to Pitt, OSU, Maryland, and VT.

Couple inside notes.

Talked to a penn state source:
They feel very good about
Jahan Dotson- wr from NJ who used to talk high of us but never visited.
Butts- same deal but from PA never visited.
Already having 1 WR that would put them at 3 and they also feel strong about Simmons from PA, who visited but I don't see it.
Why is this important? Daniel George. They may run out of room for him or he may not like seeing that many bodies already. Not a slam dunk to get him but PSU is main contender here.

Rasheed Walker - they feel good about him as well, when Bleich decommitted actually hurt us as we are much more a player for walker than him.

John Morgan- not sure they'll have room for him. We offered Jayson Oweh same day and naturally it's all PSU.

Side notes:

Recruiting NJ will be extremely hard it's pro PSU/OSU/MICH. I would rather spot recruit there and put more efforts elsewhere.

VT needs to stop telling recruits to "wait and make sure it's a perfect fit" exception is the non commitmentable offer guys. Continue to hear we're not nearly aggressive enough, nice guys don't usually win. Just look at the lack of recruits at the spring game.

10th coach - MUST be a closer/elite recruiter. Anything else would be a blow to the program. We should put him on staff now as a RC, have him get comfortable with recruits, then make him the 10th coach. Competition for 10th guy will be harder in January than now.

We need to start being more innovative and proactive. We all know we don't have the budget and facilities YET, but we need to start being more out of the box recruiting wise.

Just some insights I've heard and thoughts.
Sometimes I laugh typing this as we all talk about this like our input or thoughts will change what we're doing ha
Feel free to comment.

2019 offered South Carolina WR Jacoby Pinckney on VT: "They treat me really well"

I recently had a chance to catch up with 2019 Virginia Tech WR target Jacoby Pinckney to talk Hokies. It seems like they're firmly in the mix here.

Here's a portion of what he had to say:

On Virginia Tech: “They just do a good job of keeping in contact. They treat me really well when I’m up there. That’s just a good program. I saw they had a guy drafted at my position the other day and it obviously shows they have the coaching to put wide receiver in the league and that’s a plus. I’ve been up there about three times for visits. Right now they have a need at the receiver position so that’s a plus. It’s nice up there in Blacksburg and they have a good coaching staff that is helping turn things around.”
