Tunnel Talk EXTRA: On MJ Walker

Virginia Tech has been a hot name over the past week or so in the recruitment of five-star shooting guard M.J. Walker. It's easy to see why this is exciting for VT fans: with two outstanding guards (No. 29 Nickeil Alexander-Walker and No. 68 Wabissa Bede, in addition to sleeper forward P.J. Horne) already signed and the bigman talent existing on the roster that should be eligible and healthy (knock on wood) next year, adding a five-star talent would be a huge boost and could be the difference in competing for an ACC title and beyond.

Walker took an official visit to Blacksburg over the weekend, and from all indications on the Hokies' end, the trip went extraordinarily well. There's a battle with just a few other teams (VT feels like the only ones remaining in the hunt are Florida State and Georgia Tech, and some of our national contacts concur), but the Hokies obviously are trending right now.

"I think they are in there, but Georgia Tech and Florida State remain the favorites for it," said Rival National Recruiting Analyst Corey Evans. "Nobody really knows what the deal is. The Hokies have been working it hard behind closed doors."

Since both M.J. and his father are pretty quiet when it comes to discussing the ins and outs of his recruitment, not much has come directly from the Walker camp. The schools are still waiting with everyone to see what will come of this, but if you asked the three likely finalists, you might get three different answers. The only thing known for sure is that VT will be right there when he decides.

Walker has not divulged when, exactly, he'll be making his college commitment. The late signing period ends May 17.

My NFL Draft hot take

(Probably not such a hot take around these parts).

What the heck do NFL types love so much about Mitch Trubisky? He couldn't get the job done against Duke - which, it must be noted, is Duke - and the Browns think he'll be able to get it done against the Steelers? LOL good luck.

Maybe he develops into a good NFL player, but thinking a guy's game-ready because he had a top-15 passer rating nationally (while conveniently ignoring that two of his games were against FCS teams, plus he played No. 106 pass efficiency defense Pitt, No. 110 Duke, and No. 119 Virginia - I understand VT played those same teams, but nobody's calling Jerod Evans the first overall pick, either)... seems to me to be the epitome of my yearly annoyance of NFL teams ignoring who's actually good and going for the guys they all fall in love with for no apparent reason.

Feel free to either chime in on my rant or share your own take before tonight's draft.

Sports Illustrated's Chris Burke is high on Jerod Evans

Still sounds like the kid won't be drafted, but anyone who actually watched the Hokies play much last year (raise your hands... all of you? cool) knows that he's a pretty good quarterback:

Evans isn't perfect, of course, but I'm surprised we aren't hearing 3rd/4th type grades for him. Undrafted is just crazy - though as we've seen over the years, could be the best path to success, choosing the best situation for himself and sitting to learn from an established star.

New offer: Jayson Oweh

These New Jersey kids are going to be tough to pull from the likes of Penn State (which also offered this morning) as long as the Nittany Lions continue to recruit well, but Oweh is pretty new to the game of football, so he doesn't have the same built-in notions that a lot of the lifelong fans of the game have, either. That can be a blessing and a curse.
