Fuente swung through Baltimore St. Frances yesterday

The rapidly emerging high school power has a ton of prospects in the 2019 class and beyond:

I've actually been a little surprised that the Hokies haven't been able to get a little more traction at St. Frances, but putting in the effort is one way to change that. They've already offered the following underclassmen:

RB Joachim Banga, QB Jalon Jones (2019)
DB Jordan Toles, DE Chris Braswel (2020)

And there will certainly be more prospects breaking out in future seasons.

Jaevon Becton likely to announce today

He won't confirm or deny that's what he's talking about, but seems likely the three-star makes his commitment at some point today:

Hokies feeling good on this one. Remember, coming out of the visit, word was that he would have committed on the trip if the Virginia Tech coaches had pushed for it. They typically like to have a kid head home, reflect for a couple days, and then make a decision (as long as they're confident he won't change that decision after heading home if he's a guy they want).

This forthcoming commitment probably makes it less likely that three-star DE Jamarcus Chatmas also joins up.

Any Situation Where the Son Returns to Hokie Country?

Shane sure is schmoozing with some good company, building a pretty solid resume.
It's great to see he ain't fallen too far from the Ol' Man.
Congrats, Props, and to the Future for Coach Shane!
I rooted for MSU, TN (not as much...;)), SCe, of course the Good Guys, and Georgia.
Now I suppose I'll try to muster up a little rooting interest for OK... (ouch. I don't like boomer sooner...)
Ya think he'll ever come back thru VT as unit coach, OC, HC?

Tunnel Talk EXTRA: 2018 recruiting - just over a week to go

The news of the weekend revolves mostly around the lone official visitor (uncommitted, at least - tight end signee James Mitchell was in town as well), defensive end Jaevon Becton.

The 6-4, 230-pound three-star is a former Georgia commit (he pledged to the Dawgs within several weeks of picking up a Hokie offer last Spring), but ever since pulling back from that status, VT has bee one of the hot schools in his recruitment. In fact, if you'd said before the weekend that he'd head home from Blacksburg without having committed, it would've been considered something of a surprise.

That doesn't mean it's a negative that he's as-yet uncommitted, though. According to sources in the program, everything went about as well as expected. The coaches didn't push for a commitment, he didn't commit: simple as that. Does it mean they're trying to leave the door open to another defensive end, Jamarcus Chatman, who visited the prior weekend? That appears to be the case, though as I've mentioned in the past, they're being mum on admitting any sort of preference between the two. I think Chatman is going to be a much tougher pull, but that he's still a realistic one speaks to the work the staff has been able to do with fewer recruits up in the air following the early signing period.

Two other high-profile uncommitted recruits remain on the table: four-stars Dax Hollifield and Anthony Grant.

I remain a little wary on how Hollifield's final decision is going to go. That he didn't commit to Stanford on or immediately following his official visit is a positive (though like I just discussed with Becton, it's not necessarily meaningful. It might be, it might not be). The Hokies are remaining quietly confident the farther that visit appears in the rearview mirror, as they likely should. I'm leaning back toward this being a 50/50 recruitment after considering it more a Stanford lean. Neither option would surprise (though Clemson and North Carolina certainly would qualify, and technically they're still in the hunt).

Grant remains extremely quiet on the recruiting trail, and it's tough at any given point to determine what he's actually thinking. Sort of the opposite of a kid like Hollifield (who has always been gracious in talking to us), you have to determine meaning from lack of information, rather than trying to determine what the information being presented to you actually means. Again, the Hokies feel good on Grant, not least of which because they've done a good job pursuing teammates, as well (including being the first to offer a few from the 2019 class at Buford who have since blown up into nationally-pursued players). This is one, though, where it's mostly a guessing game.

Moving to 2019, I'm expecting the staff to add another member to that class without too much more delay.

Tunnel talk EXTRA: Some points on Hokie recruiting

Starting with the newest VT member of the coaching (not support) staff, Adam Lechtenberg. This is an interesting hire - more of a promotion from within - for the staff. Without any positional coaching responsibility, this appears to be strictly a recruiting move.

"That's wasteful," a national recruiting contact tells HokieHaven. "Yes, the tenth assistant is going to be mostly for recruiting purposes at schools around the country, but you have the opportunity to add a guy with positional coaching responsibilities, and take a little off the plate of another assistant.

"Now he can be on the field all game, and can get on the road recruiting, and focus on that, but it seems like you could have done more with the ability to hire the tenth assistant. If they were going to bring in a guy just to recruit, a young one who can connect with the kids - sort of like Zohn [Burden] is supposed to be would have been a better move."

Lechtenberg was a position coach (wide receivers and passing game coordinator) at UT-Martin during the 2016 season, so there's a chance he steps more into a role on-field as needed - he's not just a career personnel guy. Still, that 757-oriented assistant could already be on the staff (grad assistant Tommy Reamon, for example), and a guy with those connections would have made sense, especially if the on-field coaching duties aren't going to be a major factor in the promotion.

The jury will naturally be out until there's evidence of how this move works out, but at least in some circles, the expectations are low (or the disappointment is high, depending on how you view it).

Moving into more explicitly recruiting-related items, and one that we've talked about almost incessantly for a year-plus: Shelby (N.C.) 2018 linebacker Dax Hollifield.

The four-star continues to look like a VT-Stanford battle, with Clemson and UNC on the periphery. Depending on whom you ask, either the Hokies or Cardinal are considered the favorite. Folks in Blacksburg maintain optimism, and it's the nature of that optimism (which has an air of almost-smug "I know something you don't" defiance) that gives me pause, because the Stanford buzz is the most palpable.

"At the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas [in December], he was as positive about Stanford as he'd ever been about Virginia Tech - even when he was close to committing back in 2016," one source close to the situation says of Hollifield's discussions. "In fact, unless something changed on his official visit, it would be a surprise if it wasn't a done deal."

Meanwhile, those close to the Virginia Tech coaching staff continue to point out primarily that the staff's confidence is based on the level of effort they've put in - almost a "if we don't get him, there was nothing more we could have done" than anything the kid has actually told them. Maybe there's a little bit of intel staying behind the scenes from the VT end, but there would have to be for my estimation of a slight Stanford lead to change.

Even if the Hokies don't get him, I agree with the vibe around the program: there's nothing more they could have done, and there's not shame in missing on him - it just wasn't going to work out when Stanford got as serious about him as they did.

---

In other 2018 news, Rivals100 offensive lineman looks poised to make a decision between Ohio State and Penn State, but that still doesn't mean the Hokies are giving up. (And as I've mentioned in the past, that alone is a positive step even if they don't get him, because if you jump as hard into as many battles as you can, eventually the wins will come).

Coaches are in the four-star's school right now. If they were to land him, it would be considered a major coup. Again though, the level of effort they're putting into these recruitments is a refreshing improvement on the late years of the Beamer era, and will eventually pay off.

Moving on to 2019, just a couple notes (unfortunately, most of them negative):
  • The Hokies' difficulty in drawing serious interest from in-state defensive end Brandon Smith has long been a topic of discussion (and at times he's staved t off by visiting unexpectedly), but it continues to sound like the traction needed to actually land him just isn't going to come.
  • There's also work to be done with five-star running back Devyn Ford, another in-stater. He seems to be drawn to the Ohio State/Clemson vibe of program, and VT has yet to build that level of buzz. A good relationship between his family and lead recruiter Bud Foster could remain an "in" if the Hokies are to claw back into it, though.
  • A source phoned to ask a simple question, "you know [in-state offensive lineman Jesse] Hanson is a lock, right?" The answer on my end had a "yes-but" attached to it, thanks to the commitment date being set on the heels of a visit to North Carolina (no pun intended), but it sounds like all systems are go for Hanson.
Stay tuned for much more on the close to the 2018 class and the beginning of 2019 going forward.

VT hires from within for 10th assistant

Actually not the internal hire I was expecting - and a coach who doesn't have a designated position is an interesting course to take with his one:

https://virginiatech.rivals.com/news/hokies-announce-promotion-staff-addition

Still, the primary benefit of the tenth assistant is having another guy who can get on the road, and if your personnel guy can travel to visit high schoolers in-home and in-school, it's still a boost.

Film room on Keshon Artis

Catching up on the final few members of the Class of 18 (with hopefully a couple more commits to come):

https://virginiatech.rivals.com/news/from-the-film-room-keshon-artis

I really like Artis's game. He's always going to have physical limitations because of his size, but I think his athleticism and skills are well-aligned to make up for that. A faster Andrew Motuapuaka is about as tight a comparison as I've ever seen for a piece like this.

Bracketology Update- 1/29/18

We are still on the outside looking in at Lunardi's field of 68...but getting closer. He now has us listed second in his "First Four Out". Syracuse and NC St are among the final four teams he has in the Tournament, with 9 ACC teams overall making the cut.

We desperately need to beat BC on the road Wednesday night and follow that up with a home win this weekend against Miami.
