VT injury report

Questionable:
CB Adonis Alexander
OL Yosuah Nijman
RB Steven Peoples

Doubtful:
WR CJ Carroll
TE Drake DeIuliis

The importance of Nijman was underscored last week with a poor performance from the backup. Alexander's injury looked serious, but he remains day-to-day, and while it would be nice to have him, the replacement at corner is a player who's just as good (albeit very different stylistically, and you'd like to have the good tackler available). Peoples is what he is: if Jalen Holston is available, not much lost there.

Story: Conference-by-conference breakdown of the CFB Playoff Rankings

The new CFB Playoff Rankings just came out and there was some significant movement after last weekend's matchups. Here is a comparison of how each conference is ranked within the newest College Football Playoff Rankings, along with a breakdown of each team’s five-year recruiting averages.

Something that could have a secondary effect on VT

Clemson is a top contender for recent Tennessee OL decommit Cade Mays:

If the Tigers feel good about him, the vigor of their pursuit in current Hokie commit Jordan McFadden (who is visiting the reigning champs this weekend) probably wanes a bit. They're in pretty good shape with four or five other offensive linemen, even though they don't have a commit at the position yet.

I generally like Herbstriet

...but his commentary was awful Saturday night. Praising incorrect penalty calls (and ones that weren't remotely close to being right), talking about the "number of formations Miami is throwing at Bud Foster and VT" (it was about six total for the whole game: Ace slots, Ace slot tight right, Ace strong right, and empty - all from the gun - and then a couple plays from under center at the goal line), and generally not providing much.

I understand that at this point, commentary is as much about sounding like a dude having a good time (which he does extremely well) as it is about giving insight, but I've come so expect much better from him.

Notes from Fuente presser

First and foremost, the staff intends to (and thinks they will get) a medical redshirt for Drake DeIuliis, who played just a couple snaps against BC. It's against both the letter - too late in the year - and spirit - they pretty obviously invented an injury or let him play injured in that game - of the rule, but usually coaches aren't that confident without a reason.

Sounds like CJ Carroll will potentially miss the rest of the season, or play through pain now and get surgery at the end of the year.

Thanks to weather yesterday limiting their travel, the Hokies were unable to get their usual Sunday routine. They lifted instead, and the game week schedule will be adjusted (before playing Georgia Tech is not the time you want to be missing practice reps, IMO).

Kalon Gervin might still try to take VT visit

Obviously this one has swung well away from the Hokies (after he had given certain assurances to the coaches on his previous visit to Blacksburg, no less), and it would be tough to reel him in here, but there's a chance he takes a visit.

Such a trip would necessitate his high school team losing this weekend, though. VT has just one home game left and the state playoff games in Michigan are all on Saturdays going forward.
