Pre-season magazines

I was in Barnes and Noble bookstore recently. I was going to buy one of the pre season mags. But when I looked to see where it had VT ranked, I put it back on the shelf.
We were ranked 35th in that piece of trash. If they are that wrong on VT, I hate to think of all the other errors and crap that was in it.

Reminds me of one I read prior to last season. Seems they predicted every team in the nation to go 8-4 or better. There were no bad teams in their predictions. heck, they even picked that team to the north, to have a good season. I believe they ended up 5-7.

Big recruiting weekend for VT

Pulled this off of TSL (Sure would be nice to get someone like Devon Hunter on board)

EXPECTED VISITORS

JaQuan Bailey, DE, Raines (Jacksonville, FL)

Bailey is currently a Florida Gators commitment. Virginia Tech offered the 6’3″, 230-pound prospect in May, and the fact that he plans to visit shows he is seriously interested. He also visited Louisville last weekend.

Tavante Beckett, LB, Indian River (Chesapeake, VA), Class of 2016

Beckett told TSL recently that Virginia Tech is now back in front for his signature. He is also considering offers from Wisconsin and ECU, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he went ahead and committed to the Hokies this weekend.

Tahj Capehart, WR, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA), Class of 2017

Capehart is one of the top rising junior wide receiver prospects in the state. Virginia Tech, Virginia, Georgia, Miami, Ohio State and Tennessee are among the schools that have offered so far.

Eric Crosby, DL, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA), Class of 2017

Another top prospect out of Ocean Lakes High School. Quite simply, Crosby is a beast on the defensive side of the ball. Virginia Tech, Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Virginia and Ohio State are some of the early offers for Crosby, who plans to visit Ohio State today before heading to Blacksburg.

Sam Denmark, WR, Hanahan (S.C.), Class of 2016

Denmark told TechSideline.com recently that he is 100-percent solid in his commitment to the Hokies. He plans to enroll at Tech in January of 2016.

Zack Gilbert, DE, South Mecklenburg (Charlotte, N.C.), Class of 2016

Gilbert, a 6’2″, 250-pound defensive lineman, has a top five of Duke, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

Devon Hunter, ATH, Indian River (Chesapeake, VA), Class of 2017

With scholarship offers from all across the country, the 6’1″, 205-pound Hunter is one of the most coveted rising junior prospects in the state.

Patrick Jones II, DE, Grassfield (Chesapeake, VA), Class of 2016

The 6’5″, 230-pound defensive end would be a nice in-state addition to a class devoid of a defensive end right now. Jones is also a teammate of top class of 2016 wide receiver target Grant Holloway.

Patrick Kearns, OL, Darlington (Rome, GA), Class of 2016

Virginia Tech is one of the finalists for Kearns, who plays offensive tackle for his high school but showed well in an all-star game at offensive guard. A commitment alert here as well.

Brock Miller, LB, John Carroll (Fort Pierce, FL), Class of 2016

Virginia Tech made Miller’s top 8, which also consists of Boise State, Cal, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi State, NC State and Virginia. Miller visited NC State yesterday, is currently at UVa, and plans to be in Blacksburg tomorrow.

Phillip Patterson, WR, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA), Class of 2016

Duke, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest are the top contenders for the 6’2″, 185-pound Patterson. Tomorrow is huge for Virginia Tech, which may be Patterson’s final visit before announcing his commitment on August 1.

Chrishon Springs, LB, East Forsyth (Kernersville, N.C.), Class of 2016

Springs tweeted that he plans to be at Tech tomorrow. The 6’1″, 205-pound prospect does not appear to have an offer at this point.

Mike Tverdov, DE, Union (N.J.), Class of 2017

Tverdov tweeted that he will be participating in VT’s camp on Sunday. Good size at 6’4″, 225 pounds.

Jaquan Yulee, LB, Indian River (Chesapeake, VA), Class of 2016

Yulee is an Alabama commit making the trek down to Tech with teammates Beckett and Hunter. I believe he remains solid in his original pledge to the Crimson Tide, but it doesn’t hurt to get him back on campus.

***INsider: Landon Dickerson Latest***

Guys, it's been alluded to on the board, but wanted to confirm that Rivals100 OL Landon Dickerson did visit VT today. Dickerson told me via text message.

Originally, Dickerson, No. 48 in the Rivals100, had looked at visiting VT Saturday for Beamer's Barbecue. But Dickerson now plans to be at Auburn this weekend for a visit there.

This was Dickerson's first time seeing the Hokies' new indoor facility since it was completed last month. His parents got to see it when they were driving to see him at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge last month in Baltimore. Since then, Dickerson has been adamant that he wanted to see the facility for himself.

"It went great," Dickerson said. "Amazing facility. The graphics are pretty legit."

VT is in excellent shape, but Dickerson is taking his time. He's really identified with assistant coach Stacy Searels, which has made a huge difference. He'll likely take all five officials before deciding, but it still sounds like the Hokies are in the lead.

More Visitors This Weekend

Guys, just wanted to pass on that a good friend of mine, Hylton (Va.) assistant coach John Harris, text me earlier to say on Friday he's bringing 2018 stud running back Ricky Slade and 2017 tight end Jarrett Powell to VT. They'll tour the campus and hang out with coaches on Friday and hang around for Beamer's barbecue on Saturday.

We all know about Slade, but Powell is a kid VT is very intrigued about. He's not on Rivals so I'll be building him a profile, but he's a kid Harris has been high on and who the Hokies staff has asked to come down for them to see in person.

***INsider: Patrick Jones Update***

Guys, I spoke a little earlier with Grassfield (Va.) DE Patrick Jones, one of VT's top targets right now at the position. Jones has eight total offers right now, but he told me he has a top three.

That top three is VT, Duke and NC State. And the good news for the Hokies, he'll be visiting Blacksburg next weekend. Jones last visited for junior day in February and has also been to Virginia. Duke, NC State and Wake Forest. He camped at Alabama last week and at Georgia yesterday. But no offers came at either of those camps.

With the Hokies, Jones said he's been speaking with assistant coach Charley Wiles. He also liked Bud Foster and the atmosphere. Right now, I'd have to say VT is the clear leader. But he says he wants to take at least a few visits and decide mid-season.

Lastly, Jones is just now starting to come on the scene because he's a late bloomer. His birthday is in late September, so he's one of the youngest in his class. He grew from 200 pounds at the end of last season to 235 now and is benching 335 pounds, up from 225 pounds. Jones is continuing to get better and he'll get more offers. Four-star potential if he continues at his current rate.
