Olney (Md.) Good Counsel was once a pretty strong source of talent for VT - headlined by CB Kendall Fuller in the 2013 class. Like many historical pipelines, it dried up in the late stages of the Frank Beamer era (and was basically ignored under Justin Fuente).
However, I’m told that the Aug. 9 commitment date for 2023 defensive end Dylan Gooden should be one for the Orange and Maroon to keep an eye on.

Although Gooden had left VT
out of his top eight back in January, he’s backed off that list (you’ll note the tweet embedded in that message board post has been deleted), and there’s some buzz with the Orange and Maroon.
One source inside the Hokie program let me know recently that there was a very positive vibe building with the four-star. To be honest, I brushed it off at the time. However, a source close to one of the other programs under consideration reached out to let me know that
that program was also feeling like VT had pulled ahead, and now it’s definitely something to taseriously.

This is another - and there have been many - example of the current staff’s overall organization of the recruiting board, their knowledge of what is and isn’t a lost cause (they’re not perfect, but it’d be near-impossible to be worse at this than the previous staff had been), and their persistence to go out and win battles even when everything doesn’t look rosy, so long as they feel the battle is winnable.
Gooden took an unofficial visit to Blacksburg for the final camp of June, continuing to build bonds with area and position recruiter JC Price. Penn State, Pitt, and Rutgers are the only other programs he’s visited this calendar year (the June 10 trip to Piscataway was his lone official).
I’m not quite ready to put in a FutureCast for the Orange and Maroon, but I’m feeling much better about the chance with him than at any point in the past.
