Tunnel Talk EXTRA: Hokies looking for an OL

Virginia Tech may not be actively seeking new targets on the offensive line to close out the 2019 class, but they're certainly keeping lines of communication open with an old target.

Huntington (W.Va.) Spring Valley four-star Doug Nester swung by Blacksburg for a couple games this season, even when he was 100% firmly committed to Ohio State. You fairly could say he was simply taking advantage of some of the opportunities afforded to high school football recruits, and getting to watch some college football from a nice vantage point.

However, the Buckeyes have since lost head coach Urban Meyer, and it's more likely that Nester's eye wanders in a more substantial way. That Blacksburg was one of the college towns he visited even when firmly committed to OSU indicates just how serious he could be about VT now.

Listen to a little more background on the Nester situation on my appearance on ESPN Blacksburg Wednesday.

A source close to Nester informs us that he's in the process of setting up an official visit to VT, which is obviously a far more serious step in looking at a program if there's going to be a chance of a flip. At this point, a mid-week official next week is the most likely outcome. I'll update when the date is set in stone.

Again, even just a visit (serious though it is) isn't an indication that a flip is imminent. It does, however, mean that one is far more possible than it has ever looked since Nester picked OSU way back in Summer 2017. Stay tuned on the situation.

Anthony Harris's high school career has come to an end

The Hokies should have depth at PG next year (Bede as the primary player, Wilkins and Kabongo for some additional minutes), but not having a second true point is going to be unfortunate. On the plus side, he'll have time to focus on the future, rather than this high school team, for the next few months, but that's a pretty slim silver lining.

It'll be interesting to see if he heals quickly enough to be a contributor next year, or if he's not going to be fully healthy until mid-January or so (as is sort of the trend with knee injuries these days: able to run, etc. in 6-8 months, but not back to the usual level of explosiveness until a little over a year after injury), if the staff even decides to redshirt him.
