Tunnel Talk EXTRA: Hearing back from recruits in attendance

The feedback is even more positive than I was expecting. A lot of times, fans overrate the impact of the result of a game on a prospect's experience, rather than focusing on the important things (actual in-game atmosphere and relationships with the coaches, players, and other prospects), but a pretty demoralizing loss is going to tend to dampen the positive feelings nonetheless.

That doesn't appear to be the case from yesterday's loss to Notre Dame.

Even though the atmosphere started to wane in the second half when the game began to get away from the Hokies, the initial responses I've received from prospects indicate it still managed to be one of the most hype games they've been to. That's a good thing, since you want to get whatever positives you can from a recruiting perspective, even when the game is a loss. The positive feedback has even come from a couple recruits who you could describe as skeptical about VT coming into the game, which is great.

Of course, one of the biggest benefits in recruiting comes from being a good team on the field: players want to play with other great players, and they want to win games. Yesterday was a strong negative in that regard. The coaches didn't really sell playing time to prospects with the "we need you, because we're not good enough yet" angle (in part because most prospects only got to briefly talk to them after the game, if they had a postgame conversation at all), which would have made sense given the situation. Still, the priority has to be winning out the rest of the year to really become an attractive destination for the best players around the country.

I think the Hokies will rebound just like they did following the ODU embarrassment, but keeping the momentum going this time becomes all the more important - margin for error has been eliminated.

Anyone looking for a place to stay for the UNC game in CH on Oct 13?

I have a 2 BR / 2 BA condo two miles south of the UNC campus and I live alone and don't use the master BR/BA suite except for the occasional guest. A couple hundred yards from me is a bus that runs to and from campus. Normally it's free (which is good for me because I get a free ride to work) but on football game days it's $3 one way or $5 round trip per person. But that said, I'll drop you off on campus before the game and pick you up afterwards if you like. On an ordinary Saturday buses run most of the day and are free so I don't know if the bus costs money only around game time or if it's all day on a football Saturday. Also, from what I read now, game time is not yet set.

In addition to the queen sized bed in the master BR/BA suite I have an air mattress and there's plenty of floor space. For that matter I could perhaps be persuaded to vacate and rent the entire place and you could use the 2nd bedroom too but I'd have to feel very sure people weren't going to trash my place in my absence.

I'm not looking to break anyone's bank but I am doing this to try to make some cash from my unused master BR/BA suite. I'm thinking $100 a night for a single person and $120 a night for a couple and negotiable for people beyond that is reasonable. Of course, you'd have use of the rest of the place too, to watch TV or use the kitchen to make some food. Or you could use the laundry too although I suspect you wouldn't need to on such a short trip.

Anyway, just throwing that out in case I can find someone that matches what I'm offering. Let me know if you have any questions.

Caleb Farley

I am beginning to wonder if Farley would not have been a better fit at receiver. I know he should get better but he was in great part responsible for three of Notre Dame's touchdowns that would have been avoided if he had played his position properly. On the Boykin touchdown he left his man to pursue the quarterback when another player already had him in his sights. On the two Williams touchdowns (one for 98 yards) it looked like he wanted no part of the contact. His avoidance of contact and poor efforts at tackling are becoming a theme. This is an essential part of being one of DBs and it is not easy to get over a fear of hard contact. Good DBs attack the runner.

Today's visitors list and social media updates

As always, there will be additions and subtractions for kids whose ride doesn't work out, or those who manage to find last-minute transportation, etc.:

Expected visitors list: Virginia Tech v. Notre Dame 2018

There are also a few that were unable to confirm with me (most notably in-state 2020 DB/RB Malcolm Greene), so don't be surprised if a guy like that makes it in even though he's not on the list. I only include those who have confirmed with me personally - or have confirmed publicly - that they're in attendance.

Talk about the coming FSU and Notre Dame games

What do you think about the season opener in Tallahassee? FSU will feature a new HC and a new slate of assistants. The vibe in Tallahassee this year is a 180 degree change from last year when Jimbo Fisher basically sold out and gave up on the players and the team. HC Willie Taggart will feature a high octane, super fast break, spread offense. Have the Hokies faced many offenses like that and how did they do in the past? Will Bud Foster be doing anything special for this game?

Look for FSU to feature two 5 star RB's.........Laborn and Akers. Both are explosive and can take it the distance on most any play. The Noles will feature a full slate of receivers but look for 6'4" red shirt freshman Tamorrion Terry. He is being compared to Randy Moss. And right now it is uncertain who will be the starting QB for the Noles.

How will the Hokie offense look this year? What will it look like and what can we expect?

And looking ahead what are your thoughts on playing at home against Notre Dame? ND's QB has a big problem completing passes over 10 or 15 yards. So if Bud's defense can stop the ND run that should allow the Hokies an opportunity to play a ball control game and run the clock. It would be a nice advantage to get the lead early on. Thoughts, ideas, comments?
