Tunnel Talk EXTRA: Two weekend decisions

Virginia Tech will see two prospects decide this weekend, one in each of the major sports. Let's look at them chronologically.

First comes on the gridiron, when local hero Cole Beck makes his choice between VT, North Carolina, and Pitt this evening. The Blacksburg High standout is a 6-1, 180-pound back with legit 10.4-second speed in the 100-meter dash (extremely fast), and he could actually play a number of roles at the next level, and even put out a junior highlight reel of defense-only clips.

I do, however, think he's a running back, and early in his career a return specialist, at the next level. I also believe he will do that at Virginia Tech - to the degree that I don't even think UNC or Pitt fans will tune in to Twitter this evening to see his choice (the coaching staffs at those schools certainly won't bother if they have the same feel for it as the Hokies do). That commitment will come after his homecoming game tonight, so it'll be a little late on a Friday, but it should mean good news for the Hokies.

It will be interesting to watch whether it means bad news for Caleb Steward down the line. Beck is the better of the two running backs, and numbers are tight enough that it makes little sense to bring in two runners in this class. If I were king of Hokie recruiting, he would be looking over his shoulder.

Tomorrow evening, a hoopster is potentially joining the fold, as well. This one has a little more mystery to it, with Fairburn (Ga.) Hughes forward Landers Nolley seeming to favor Virginia Tech and Illinois over the pack (which also included Georgia and Georgia State). When he announced his final two this morning, though, it was the Bulldogs, not the Illini, joining VT.

What's behind the twist? Well, typically when a perceived favorites list has some changes to it over time, the consistent school in the group feels pretty good. However, he is on an official visit to Georgia today into tomorrow, which not only gives the coaching staff there a last chance to sway him, it also means he'll be announcing his commitment right on the heels of that visit. Usually, a scheduled announcement right after an official visit means that school is the intended choice. (Complicating factors: usually the scheduling happens after taking the visit, indicating the strong trip led to the decision to commit, while on the other hand, why would Georgia host him on the visit if they thought both that he made up his mind and that they needed to sway him on said trip?).

At this point VT hasn't gotten a turndown, so they're still in the mix, but I would lean toward Georgia for Nolley - admittedly just a guess between the two at this point.

Film review: offense

I thought this was a fascinating post to create:

The offense really should have done better. If the coaches' gameplan had been trying to execute the things the Hokis do well, rather than assuming they wouldn't be able to (and instead attempt to trick Clemson), this game could have been competitive, despite the talent disparity.

Clemson-Virginia Tech Game

Clemson fan here coming to see how y'all are feeling about your team for the upcoming season? My wife and I normally try to make one road game a year, and we decided to travel to Blacksburg for this one.

As far is Clemson is concerned, the defense will be very strong, with our front seven our strength. Offensively, we will have a ton of weapons, it will just be a matter of OLine growth and a solid qb candidates to emerge.

Kelly Bryant is a true junior and is an insanely gifted runner. His reads, accuracy, and deep ball still leave plenty to be desired.

Cooper is a redshirt freshman and has the strongest arm, but struggles with reads and general field awareness. Weakest runner of the three.

Hunter Johnson is a true freshman early enrollee. Very good thrower and runner, but lacks playbook knowledge and decision making, like most freshman.

Most Clemson fans think Kelly will start the year off, with either Cooper or Johnson taking over by the third or fourth game. My
Money is Johnson to be the man.

Any questions y'all might have about Clemson I will do my best to answer.

CU Tiger here

Saturday was my first trip to VT...very impressed with fans, facilities, campus!
We were treated well as we try to do with visitors to Clemson.

Couple of negatives, and this is on your Admins...1) Putting our band in the nosebleed because UVA and other ACC schools did that to you is beneath a 1st class institution. Your band will not be treated this way when you return to CU. 2) The refusal of legal currency (our $2 bills) in concessions was ridiculous and PETTY. We were told the administration instructed them to refuse.

You have great coaching and a good young team, you are on the way up....Go Tigers!

Just wrapped up reviewing the defensive film...

Hokies came out to compete on that side of the ball, though Clemson definitely made it easier by just trying to run out the clock for a really significant portion of the second half.

I generally get annoyed when fans complain about holding (especially because they're consciously ignoring that their own team is getting away with the same holds on the other side of the ball), but there were two or three really egregious ones that went Clemson's way. One (on Clemson's first drive) was basically in 5 yards of space on either side, a hand around the neck of Tremaine Edmunds... and allowed for a long pass on third down. That's really bad stuff from the refs.

Maybe if VT had gotten the stop there (it would have been fourth down on the 19-yard line, so maybe they end up with the same result of a field goal anyway), it could have given a bit of confidence early, and who knows how differently it plays out.
