The 2017 Virginia Tech quarterback commit took his official visit to Oregon last weekend. Although he's said he will remain solid with Virginia Tech, any commit taking other visits at least has a bit of wiggle in the strength of his pledge.
Hendon Hooker made the cross-country trip from Greensboro, N.C. to Eugene, Ore. with his parents and little brother over the weekend.
So how did the trip go? Well for starters, the Ducks were blown out by Stanford, 52-27. Quarterback Justin Herbert was sacked three times (on just 30 passing attempts). This could be the beginning of the end for the Oregon coaching staff. In the wake of the visit, Hooker gave a lukewarm-at-best post-visit review.
"The visit was good," he said. "My family and I enjoyed it."
That's about the most negative review of a visit you'll see: generally even mediocre visits inspire a bit of effusive praise, only because that's what recruits think they should say. It doesn't seem like Oregon will be much of a threat. However, other schools - perhaps seeing that he's at least willing to go on visits - are throwing their hats in the ring. Tennessee pulled the trigger on an offer for Hooker this week, and while he hasn't set anything up, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Hooker make a stop in Knoxville.
However, he insists that Hokie fans and coaches shouldn't lose any sleep about whether VT will be able to retain his commitment.
"Nah, they have nothing to worry about," Hooker said with a laugh.
Hooker is a three-star and the No. 24 dual-threat quarterback nationally, but his
big senior season so far could see him get a boost when the rankings are updated. Several of his teammates at Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley High School - and friends from around the area - are also VT targets.
