Alright Hokies....

I said we would figure out where we were, for better or worse this week leading up to last nights game. No other way to chalk it up, last nights loss was very frustrating for everyone involved and VT should have won the game and they know this. The self inflicted wounds and undisciplined play has to be turned around in a hurry, along with some questionable personnel packages but now ACC play is here and time to grow up in a hurry and learn from this one.

How are you all feeling and any questions you have regarding where we are at and moving forward?

A few observations

1) is the locker room unified? You got to think all of these penalties stem from frustration, which has roots in lack of trust. Got to think some of the older players especially may not be taking the transition well...I.E. the Teller issue, some issues with some defensive personnel. Does the staff really have the whole locker room right now?

2) the fumbles I think come down to one thing. We are trying to go go go go on offense, so we aren't as secure with the ball. This will take time but I don't expect it to continue.

Step back from the ledge..

Positives:

1) we ran the ball well

2) we threw the ball well

3) our o line play is worlds above where it has been

Negatives

1) defense. Foster has to figure out how to stop the option. This is his weakness.

2) discipline - call it nerves, sounds like there's some disunity which is to he expected during s transition. Hopefully these issues work themselves out.

3) turnovers. It's simple. Can't turn it over. I attribute a lot of it to the hurried pace and being in the mindset to go go go. This won't change overnight but should get better.

So what's the main takeaway? We can compete with anyone else on our schedule. We competed just fine with Tennessee. All in all I was very impressed with the overall way we played save for the penalties and turnovers. The culture is changing, it will take time and there will be rough patches. It doesn't sound like the locker room is loyal right now and that will take time. Hope for some solid bounce back wins the coming weeks to gain a little bit of quiet mo going justo a brutal October. I certainly think it's possible to enter lane on October 20 against Miami with only one loss.

I think the greatness that is UTenn football...

...might have been exhaggerated a little bit.

Or maybe a LOT.

Although Dobbs has definitely lit up a stout App St defense to the tune of 57 yards passing so far, and UTenn's ungodly amazing running game has put up an very impressive 59 yards in their own right.

App St up 13-3, 3:00 left in 1st half.

I'm not sure how VT's overmatched defense will hold this juggernaut to less than a thousand yards? Maybe Bud Foster can go hang out with the App St coaches next week and learn a little something.

Any Injuries?

We must get a handle on fumbles and penalties. Otherwise I think there are signs that we could be a good football team and win a lot of games. Does anyone know if we sustained in injuries that would cost us any players next week. It appeared McMillan may have been hurt late in the game and Mihota and Nigel Williams also went out with injuries but don't know if they returned. We need all hands on deck next week for BC. They always seem to play us tough.

Halftime Thoughts...

The game couldn't have started much better. Aside from a missed field goal (at a point when kicking it was a poor decision by the coaches), VT marched down the field a couple times, and nothing was doing at al for UT. The Hokie offense looked much more diverse - and that gave QB Jerod Evans some easier decisions and comfort running the show.

Big Hokie mistakes - a poorly-timed snap that his the motion-man for a turnover, a few penalties on offensive linemen, even a third-and-short dive against a stacked front - opened the door a crack for the Vols, and Butch Jones's crew has waltzed right through.

As stated in the preview, giving a UT offensive line that has played terribly so far this year any confidence was the worst thing that could happen, and Virginia Tech started to do just that after the opening frame. The Vols' first two touchdowns came on a ten-yard fade route (after the aforementioned Hokie fumble) and another long bomb, and once the Vols saw a little bit of success, they front five started playing much better.

That said, VT saw that the left side of the interior, in particular, is vulnerable, and that Josh Dobbs is basically a mediocre quarterback with his arm (though he thankfully has some really good weapons to bail him out at times). The Hokies need to get back to pressuring him, and get the Vol run game out of a rhythm.

VT showed that they're better man-for-man through the first quarter, and despite poor play since, it seems to be Hokie mistakes giving a lesser opponent (although one that doesn't see itself as lesser) not only momentum, but a big lead. If Virginia Tech can come out and play to their capability to open the second half, they can reverse some of that momentum, but to a certain degree the damage may be done - the Vols have some confidence through no fault of their own, and a 10-point deficit will be tough to overcome if UT can parlay that confidence into more consistent play.

Anyone hearing

About our entrance at Bristol. I'm reading Tenn is the home team so their logos on the field the 25 just like Neyland and they will be doing the Vol walk and going through the T etc. Ayone know if we are doing our entrance?? Surely we are playing Metallica? Hopefully better than they did at Fed-ex against Boise St I might add.
