Politically Correct VT

Just saw that we dis-invited a respected Wall Street Journal columnist from speaking at our university because.......he spoke candidly about the state of race relations in our nation (i.e. he is politically incorrect). Note: Jason Riley happens to be black - not that it should matter. Dean Sumichrast then denied Riley was invited to speak at VT. Big mistake - Riley published the invitation.

It pains me to say that I am embarrassed by our academic leaders' lack of courage and integrity. Free speech is only allowed for liberal viewpoints. Apparently all else is now hate speech at VT.

Hello everyone! Happy to be here!

My name is David Merrill and I'm the new editor here at Hokiehaven.com. I'm originally from Omaha, NE and I've spent the last several years covering Southwest Minnesota State in the booming metropolis of Marshall, MN. :)

I have to tell you, I've always had tremendous respect for Virginia Tech's football program, the immense success Frank Beamer enjoyed here and the program's tens of thousands of passionate fans. Even from afar, it has always been abundantly clear that football is a big deal here and it matters so much to Va. Tech people.

I look forward to being a part of the Blacksburg, Va. community in a few weeks and most importantly I look forward to interacting with everyone here. One of the things I'm excited about is I know many of you are longtime season ticket holders. You've got so many stories to tell about Va. Tech's football program and everyone loves a good story, so I look forward to hearing them.

Please bear with me. I'm new, so I'm learning, too. Over the last couple of weeks I've been working on a lot of content for the site that I hope you will enjoy. Last week I had a great conversation with Tom Schad of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. I wanted someone's insight on Coach Fuente, someone who had been around him extensively. We'll have part two of the interview tomorrow morning.

One thing. My focus, my primary focus here will be football and recruiting. It's not that we won't have some baseball and basketball coverage from time to time, but I feel strongly that we should be laser-focused on football and recruiting. So right up front I wanted everyone to know that's going to be reflected in our content.

I hope everyone is having a great spring. I'm happy to be here and I'm now at your service!

All the best!
