Frank Beamer Press Conference

Guys, my story on Beamer at today's press conference, including this quote: "Let me say this, the only thing I'm really concerned about right now is Boston College," Beamer said. "That's the only thing on my mind. I can tell you, the second part of that is whatever's good for Virginia Tech, what's best for Virginia Tech is what I'm into. I've always felt that way and always will and that's it."

Guys, I just got off the phone with South Mecklenburg (NC) three-star DE Zack Gilbert, who just got home about an hour ago from his official visit at VT. Accompanying him on the trip was his teammate and friend, Antonio Wallace. This was the first time Gilbert had ever been to VT.

Gilbert said the visit was different than what he imagined. He told me he loved the Hokie stone and that he loved the campus, especially how all the leaves are so maroon and orange right now. As far as the game, Gilbert said he loved the atmosphere and how into the game the fans were. He told me, "The fans and how everything was set up, it was great football, regardless of the record."

Gilbert said he also spent a lot of time talking with coach Frank Beamer, defensive coordinator Bud Foster and assistant coach Shane Beamer, his primary recruiter. Gilbert liked how family-oriented everything is and how the Hokies have had so many families play there. With Frank Beamer, Gilbert said "He’s a really great person to be around and talk to. He’s been in the game since 1975." Gilbert also said the coaches told him they would want him to play as a defensive end and also a fullback when needed on offense. He does that in high school already, anyway, especially around the goal line. And Gilbert likes how they envision him.

Besides VT, the three schools still in play are Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Kansas State. Gilbert has been very fond of the Panthers for some time and as I've mentioned on here before, he's a legacy there. He's also slated to visit there officially Nov. 7 for the Notre Dame game.

Gilbert hasn't set any other visits, but I'm not sure he's gonna take any others. He said he likely won't take any others after Pitt until his playoffs are over. But he also said he could decide by Thanksgiving. Gilbert is set to graduate in December and enroll in college in January. It sounds like the Hokies gained a little ground after this visit. But in all honesty, unless his Pitt visit goes badly, I think he's 60/40 in favor of Pitt over VT. So we'll know pretty well after that visit for sure.

Pet Peeve

I know we have multiple problems, but there are some things we do that aren't addressed, no matter what the level of the coaching. Here are a few of my pet peeves, in order.

1. The constant delay of looking over to the sidelines to get the play, many times resulting in a rush to beat the play clock and/or taking the clock down at the end of the half or the game. I think this may have cost us a shot at getting down the field at the end of the game vs. Duke. Quicker signals or several scripted plays? Bringin plays in with players or automatic plays with certain defensive formations?

2. Getting burnt on crucial pass plays all through the game. I know we have inexperience at the DB position, but is it possible to play just a little zone or help defense to we don't get burnt with a pass constantly.

3. Changes in Offensive personnel when it seems we are just getting the O rolling(Motley for Brewer at crucial times? Or taking McMillian out after a good run). Let McMillian get fired up and give him the ball. And Brewer has shown consistency the last game, Motley hasn't.

4. Giving up early touchdowns in the 1st quarter to get behind. We have done this a lot the past few years. We have gotten in the habit of going on D even if we win the toss and the opponent scores with a quick drive. It seems we are always on O at first with the other team in the lead. Maybe take the ball first and show just a small amount of confidence(hope) in the O?

Just a few. Anybody have any more. I'm interested in other's opinions.

How do we finish the season?

I think that at best case we win 6 games and make it to a bowl game. We could very well not go bowling if we don't change things right away.

I see us losing to Duke and Miami. Duke is playing really well right now and have played us tight before.

I see the only win as Virginia.

The rest are toss-ups in my mind. If we win 3 of those 5 tossups then we go bowling. That will be a tall order. I can easily see us losing to Pitt and UNC. Boston College, NC State, and GT could all three beat us. If that is the case then we possibly only win 2 out of the 5 tossups and don't go bowling.

What does everyone else think?

Am I missing something?

I'm all for change however be careful what you wish for see Tennesee just to name one. This season has been a big let down and there are numerous coaching problems to go around even for Bud this year who we agree has been rock solid for us. However yesterday's game was anything but a great game with yes mistakes here and there but you can't say this wasn't the best offensively we have looked all year! And as far as the last drive that was terrible no way about it. But pretty sure they were all caught by SUPRISE as to why the clock was running when Phillips ran out of bounds clock should have stopped. The biggest issue for the day by far is the corners taking the double move everytime. That's on Torian period but everyone wants him as the next DC. It's time for Beamer to go and it will be tough for all and we may get it right like Michigan or we may not but not every tough hard fault game is no need to crush the man who made this program what it is so we can complain about 7 wins. Kids played very good today and we lost to a 6-1 team. This isnt the old Duke teams this is a very solid team that plays with the big boys now. Today's loss was a tough one to take but far from a loss for everyone to crush them. If we played like today every game this year I'd take it everytime. We complain all the time how bout someone mention the positives when it happens also? Brewer and McMillian and the Oline to name a few.

My unpopular post

Let me be honest with everyone on this board . . . I am firmly convinced that Frank Beamer needs to step down and bring his storied career to an end. He no longer possesses the ability, as the head coach, to put a team on the field that is competitive and that can meet the expectations of the fans, the coaches, the university and Frank himself.

Having said that, I refuse to be disrespectful to the man that has brought so much enjoyment, excitement, pride and recognition to this university and this fanbase. If the price I have to pay for all he has given us is 3 or 4 years of mediocrity in football, then I will gladly pay it.

If the fans think they are suffering, I can assure you it pales in comparison to what he is going through. I resent the comments about him being stupid, ignorant, retarded, etc.

It is unfortunate that the man who has done so much for so many is abandoned during his last days by ungrateful and disrespectful fans, coaches who don't do their jobs and players who play without emotion and who don't follow assignments.

If Frank told us all to "go to hell" it would be justified.

frustrated

Is any one else frustrated with everything associated with football games? Its is a nightmare at the gates with these little coded readers. Not enough gate open ! had a gate open behind stands but had it blocked off and wouldn't let you up hill? Seems like whole operation is a cluster

Of note with Frank...

Hey guys,

It came to my attention during post-game interviews that Frank Beamer had looked like he had been crying. He rubbed his eyes and they were glassy... his bottom eye lids were also rimmed with tears. I know that older people tend to have watery eyes, but this to me looked like he had been crying. Even Bud Foster came in post-game interviews looking a little beat up. Any thoughts on what this could mean? This was a huge loss for not only the program, but the security of Beamer's job as well.

Defense

Am I the only one watching this game? Our defense is not even a hint of its former self. I am tired of excuses and I used to be the biggest Bud supporter but I believe it's time for a complete change from top to bottom if this is the best we can put on the field.
