Fan Reaction to Mike Young Hire

I've been perusing various social media and VT fan sites since the announced hiring of Mike Young. In a word, the consensus fan reaction is "brutal". Negative comments seem to outweigh positive comments by about a 70-30 margin, with both Babcock and Young equally in the cross hairs.

I guess everyone was hoping, if not expecting. another high profile coaching hire of someone we've all seen repeatedly prancing the sidelines on TV leading some other program to great national acclaim. Babcock did not deliver on that "vision" this time around, and HokieNation is furious!

Almost every "name brand" successful coach had a humble background and came from a low profile setting before achieving great success on the national stage. Who would have thought a coach at Army with a modest career record would become arguably the greatest coach of all time at Duke? Who would have thought John Bellein, who toiled for years within the low to mid ranks of college basketball, would become one of the outstanding coaches in America at West Virginia and now Michigan? In football, do you think an obscure position coach at Clemson a decade ago was a "homerun" hire on the day Dabo Swinney was promoted to Head Coach?

A majority of our fan base is running Mike Young out the door before he even has a chance to enter. I find this appalling and a very bad look for a fan base that purports to be among the best, most loyal in America.

Mike Young deserves a chance to succeed and our full support as fans!

Hoops coaching search new update 4/7/19

Plenty of twists and turns in the past couple days - Kevin Willard close to taking the job, then suddenly he's extended at Seton Hall. Same with UMBC's Ryan Odom. Here are the latest stories...

It won't be Odom, nor Willard. Both did have conversations with Hokies AD Whit Babcock, but it sounds like neither progressed particularly deep into that process.

Cincinnati's Mick Cronin looking more and more likely as other options fall by the wayside.

The UCLA job is an attractive one for the types of coaches may also be interested in, so the Bruins' search is relevant to keep tabs on.

Daily hoops coach news roundup: April 5, 2019

Mike Barber in the RTD: "Getting it right is the most important thing." There's no shortlist of candidates or timeline for the hire.

The Stadium with some candidates. (Includes some names I didn't have on my hotboard, a couple of which I'll add to the next edition). Syracuse's Adrian Autry is another name to consider, though credible rumors about him have yet to really emerge.

Cincinnati's Mick Cronin a serious option. As I said previously, I don't necessarily know that he's going to be at Cincy forever, but I also don't know that VT is the program to lure him away (it's going to take $$$, and the Hokies famously don't have a ton of it). The relationship with Whit - with whom he worked when the Hokies' AD was in the same position in the Queen City - could be a factor though.

Local columnists don't think there's much to it yet, though.

Meanwhile, "it's a little serious" with Seton Hall's Kevin Willard already.
