Recruiting INSIDE the Tunnel: A new Futurecast

After talking with some sources, I've entered a Rivals FutureCast for 2024 athlete Tyler Mason:

The 6-0, 190-pounder from Mount Airy (N.C.) has been one of the Hokies' prime running back targets throughout the class. He led Mount Airy to a 15-1 record, and running backs coach (now tight ends coach) Stu Holt offered him immediately after an MVP performance in the North Carolina 1A State Title game (23 rushes for 149 yards and three touchdowns in a 20-7 victory).

Mason is visiting Blacksburg for the spring game today, and it would not surprise me if that saw the end of his recruitment.

Recruiting Senior film review: Chance Fitzgerald

The final piece of the senior film reviews and in my eyes, easily the best prospect in this class. Daequan Wright is the only guy since 2019 (I liked both offensive linemen who transferred out, and Jaden Payoute was perhaps even better athletically, but less polished as a football player) who even seems in the same category. "What Tim thinks of you as a recruit" is obviously not destiny - Mansoor Delane is an obvious one who surprised me after he arrived - but if Fitzgerald lives up to his potential, he should be a star.

Hoops INSIDE the Tunnel: Hearing

Folks at our Penn State site have alerted me to the fact that VT’s replacement for Mike Jones will come from the Nittany Lions’ staff.

PSU Assistant JD Byers is expected to leave for Blacksburg. His wife, Marci, is the women’s volleyball coach here, and they have a young daughter. Not an easy proposition to be so far apart with both parents in demanding jobs. Byers has other connections, having coached at VCU and Randolph-Macon.

More to come as confirmations are made.

Recruiting Brody Barnhardt to NC State

It always felt like the Hokies could have sealed the deal for the 2024 safety if they'd wanted to, but for whatever reason they didn't make that push (presumably just because they feel good about other safeties they like more).

Recruiting Recent offer making a commitment soon

2024 OL from Pennsylvania. If the Hokies consider him a take (I think they might, but they would prefer he not move so quickly - and from his perspective, locking down a spot is part of why he wants to get it out of the way quickly), it'll be a VT/Cuse battle:

He's been to Blacksburg several times and Syracuse a couple times recently... but I think the Orange have put more effort into his recruitment and may win out.
