A couple potential visitors next weekend...

Not this coming weekend, but the following one. D.C. St. John's teammates Kofi Wardlow and Tyree Johnson are considering official visits to Blacksburg the 27th. Wardlow picked Maryland over VT a couple weeks ago, while Johnson is a longtime commit to Texas A&M.

I don't see much traction in either recruitment - VT was content to let Wardlow pick Maryland, for example - unless there's an unexpected miss or two at defensive end. Johnson seems pretty set with A&M and his official there this weekend could result in no further visits (including the currently-scheduled Auburn trip for the 27th), while Wardlow will have to cancel a Boston College trip to make it back to Blacksburg.

Pieces left:

So DM4VT said will take 6-9:
Here's a list of people we are going after/have a solid chance with:
Hunter
Garbutt
Brad Johnson
Zion
Sean Nelson
Dazz
Bryce Watt
Victor
Ameer Speed
Becton
Porcher
Dylan Rivers
Tank
Brini
Obviously prob porcher OR victor
If ameer and Bryce commit, doubt we take tank or Brini.
Becton don't see it either
Dazz a take?
Nelson- do we really need another wide out?
Rivers is a toss up
But there is 14 names for 9 max spots.
IMO would love to end with 4 DE 2 DT 4 LB 2 CB 2 S
Offense is all but set

**New** Devon Hunter speaks post-visit

...following his trip to Florida, with our Blake Alderman:

My stance on matters remains the same. His words (and what he said to those around him on the visit) are not nearly effusive enough to make me think he's changed his mind and will no longer select Virginia Tech Friday evening.

Fuente welcoming the early enrollees

Their first day of school is today. Thus far, he's had messages for Hendon Hooker, Aundre Ricardo-Kearney, Caleb Farley, Silas Dzansi, AJ Bush, and Terius Wheatley.

Kalil Pimpleton (who it sounds like may miss the first couple days of classes and move in Thursday or Friday) and Dalton Keene are the only expected early enrollees off the top of my head that he has yet to post something about.

He's been doing one every half-hour or so; I'm keeping an eye out for Keene and we'll see if Pimpleton gets his message today or has to wait a couple days.

**Tunnel Talk EXTRA*** Other people's (sometimes former) commits

There aren't a ton of uncommitted prospects around the country right now, but Virginia Tech is content to look at other schools' commitment lists to finish off their own, as well.

When Virginia Tech initially offered Hampton (Va.) athlete Dazz Newsome a few weeks back, it felt like an inevitability that the three-star athlete would follow older brother Deon to Blacksburg. However, the 5-10, 170-pounder remained committed to Maryland, and it seemed like interest from the Hokies' end had faded with VT content to let him remain a Terp. An official visit to North Carolina over the weekend saw him pull back from his Maryland pledge, though, and it will be interesting to see where the Hokies decide to take this one. He may not be priority No. 1 for the rest of the class, but they intend to get Newsome on-campus in the last two weekends before Signing Day. The prospect himself isn't talking, so was the re-opening of his recruitment a result of a better-than-expected trip to Chapel Hill, or a more general move that should see the Hokies step up in a major way?

Toms River (N.J.) North three-star Bryce Watts is another defensive back option suddenly back on the market, with Rutgers as the Big Ten school suffering a decommitment this time. Watts has been trending this way for some time, and had long told us that a trip to Blacksburg was likely (even when his Rutgers commitment looked solid to outsiders). He'll make it to campus this weekend, and it would not surprise to see him pull the trigger. In fact, it's unclear who any other contenders are, barring the Hokies not having enough room and leaving him heading back to Rutgers.

One player didn't decommit from his Big Ten school over the weekend, but as predicted recently, Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes receiver Sean Nelson will visit Blacksburg the weekend before Signing Day - while remaining committed to Maryland. The three-star is a 6-2, 180-pound outside receiver, and that has become a position of need following early departures to the NFL (especially since, according to sources, the long-rumored academic issues for four-star Ryan Jones have him as a non-take for VT right now - it's unclear if he'll even take an official visit before Signing Day at this point). Given the depth chart at his spot, the need may be great enough to give Nelson serious thought to making the flip. Another to keep an eye on this weekend.

There should be one other (new) elsewhere-committed prospect on an official visit to campus this weekend, according to a source close to the player. This ACC pledge plays a position of need, but we're not quite ready yet to put his name out there - the Hokies' coaching staff appears to be trying to keep this one on the DL for the time being. If we get the go-ahead, we'll share his name soon.

***Tunnel Talk EXTRA*** Top targets visiting elsewhere

After breaking down a few visitors who are or have been committed to other schools, how about some top Hokie targets who were on the road elsewhere, as well?

qflphmgwlrw6x7tjhtsw

Virginia Tech's top target practically throughout the 2017 recruiting cycle has been Chesapeake (Va.) Indian River safety Devon Hunter. The No. 47 recruit in the country will announce his college commitment this Friday, with only two official visits under his belt. He saw Blacksburg the Dec. 9 weekend, and more recently was at Florida over the past couple days. He's been pretty quiet over the latter phases of his recruitment, but we touched base with sources in the Sunshine State to see how the Gators felt it went.

"He seemed to have a good time," Inside the Gators recruiting analyst Blake Alderman reports. "He told a few other visitors it will definitely be between VT and UF. It's just that nobody has said "yeah, we're getting him' [that makes me think it won't be Florida]."

Given that the hype of a recruiting weekend often sees prospects tell those around them that the school they're currently visiting will be the choice, even if it's not (a couple potential examples in a moment), that's a positive sign for Virginia Tech... especially since he has given such assurances to Virginia Tech commits and coaches in the past. It should be no surprise that Alabama and Auburn - which he'll visit in the next two weeks after the pledge - aren't in the mix right now. They'll definitely try to change that status even when he's technically off the board when on their campuses.

Two of VT's top defensive end targets - one a commit - were visitors in Pittsburgh this weekend. The Panthers have been an interesting recruiting rival in the 2017 cycle, and they're trying to steal away both former commit Tyjuan Garbutt and current commit Nathan Proctor from the Hokies.

"Proctor and Garbutt both told multiple Pitt commits that they'd be coming to Pitt, but it's been hard to sort out how much of that is just kids saying that during a visit and how much is legit," said Ryan Donnelly of Panther-Lair (see what I mean about the statements kids make to each other on visits?). "Pitt feels better on Proctor than they do on Garbutt from what I can gather. He's always a relatively quiet kid but going totally radio silent with everybody besides his family is a bit unlike him."

Pitt is worried about an in-home visit to Proctor from VT head coach Justin Fuente, feeling it could be the thing that shores up his pledge and shuts down the recruiting process altogether. That in-home will take place tonight and the Hokies have "complete confidence" that it will indeed seal Proctor's commitment once and for all, though they acknowledge that there's a bit of wiggle room right now. They haven't been worried about Garbutt for some time, but the fact that he hasn't simply re-committed after many, many trips to Blacksburg means there's some uncertainty there, as well, even if that uncertainty is far less.

Another current commitment will spend some time checking out other schools in the next two weeks, always a bit of a concern. Stockbridge (Ga.) running back Jalen Holston will see Michigan State and Minnesota. That's a team that ha pulled sleepers out of Georgia in the past, and one that recently added one of the most enthusiastic head coach-recruiters in the nation, respectively. Since Holston has been VT's top running back target ever since five-star Khalan Laborn opted to head South to Tallahassee instead of staying home, losing Holston would be a blow indeed. As is the case with other players discussed here, they think they'll hold onto him, but there is a sense of "we just don't know" as it relates to how the visits might impact that.
