***** ACC Issues Institutional Fines to Louisville and Virginia Tech

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference has issued institutional fines of $25,000 to the University of Louisville and Virginia Tech following its review of the internal investigation conducted by Wake Forest University and the subsequent appropriate discussions. The funds received from the two fines, which are the highest allowed by the league’s bylaws, will be placed into the Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship account.

In addition to the respective institutional fines, the Atlantic Coast Conference is fully supportive of the actions taken by the University of Louisville in issuing its suspension.

Following the league’s review of the internal investigation by Wake Forest, and subsequent discussions between the conference office and schools, it was determined that game plan information for four games was provided to three institutions over the span of three seasons. The three schools involved are Virginia Tech (2014), Louisville (2016) and Army (2014, 2016).

“I am deeply disturbed something like this would occur, and regardless of the degree of involvement, the protection of the competitive integrity of our games is fundamental to any athletic contest,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “Sportsmanship and ethical values are at the core of competitive integrity and in these instances, those were missing. The expectation, regardless of the sport, is that any athletics department staff members would immediately communicate with their supervisor if they are approached by someone from another institution with proprietary information.”

The ACC will have no further comment surrounding this matter.

Former Wake Coach Provided Game Plan To Opponents

An investigation by the Wake Forest Athletic Department following the Wake Forest-Louisville football game on November 12th, found that former Wake Forest coach Tommy Elrod has provided or attempted to provide confidential game plan information to opposing teams, starting in 2014.

On Nov. 12, the Wake Forest football team lost at Louisville, 44-12. The Demon Deacons had a second-half lead, but things fell apart down the stretch, and the Cardinals blew them out. After the game, Wake coach Dave Clawson said he was worried that Louisville, perhaps, had
gotten its hands on some of Deacs’ game plan documents. Athletic director Ron Wellman said a member of Wake’s travel party had come across such documents while in Louisville for the game.

Multiple Updates on VT out of state commits playing late in the playoffs

Roswell, GA, lost last night against Grayson High in the Georgia 7A championship game. Both teams are ranked in USA Today's top 10. Maliq Willis, a VT commit as an athlete from Roswell was 19 of 30 with 261 yds passing and two touchdowns. His team led most of the game, but Grayson took the lead with about 1 minute left in the game, then down one touchdown with 58 seconds, Willis led his team down the field from his own 30 and threw a 20 yard touchdown pass as time expired. The extra point was good and this tied the game to put it in overtime. Grayson won the game in overtime 23-20. The QB for Grayson is a Clemson commit.

Hey folks.....congrats on your BB win yesterday...the 2nd half must have been something

on another note...what's your take on this Wake Forest crap? It's interesting because it involves our former wide receivers coach Galloway. Wake Forest has been so bad no one except maybe Army should need their plays. I just can't for the life of me figure out why a former player and graduate would stab his own team in the back....thoughts?

Hokies commit, target in Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas

The 80th annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas took place at Wofford University in Spartanburg, S.C. on Saturday, with the North Carolina squad coming from behind to beat South Carolina 17-10. Here are some awards for the players who impressed this week as decided by national recruiting analysts Woody Wommack and Adam Friedman.

MR. VERSATILITY -- Caleb Farlay

Virginia Tech fans should be excited about getting Farley. He played quarterback in high school but lined up at wide receiver all week. Farley had no problem getting open and made his fair share of catches. He will be a big play threat throughout his college career and even ran the ball during the game. He finished the game with 45 yard receiving.

You see the rest of the awards here.

Va Tech Offenses Numbers the best since 2000

Total Yards Ranking was 22nd in America. That is by far the highest since the 1999 and 2000 season, or to put it another way, the best since a decade and a half. The 2003 season had a total O ranking of 38th and since 2000, the VT offense has only cracked the top 50 in total O a total of 4 times. Coincidence? What are the odds that the coaching changes just by chance happen on a given year and it just happens to be the highest ranked O at VT in 16 years? Point being........it exposes VTs old offensive system coaching failures, and more important it sheds light on a bright future.

Here are some more stats. Per football outsiders, this VT O ranks 52nd in efficiency which is the second highest at VT since Football Outsiders started.

Defensively, we rank 20th in the nation per football outsiders in defensive efficiency, but we are 36th in total defense (yds per game allowed...which is not as good as Fosters overall average, yet still not bad.

I think the numbers above shed light on optimism and a bright future for VT football. For a first year coach and probably the least talented VT team on paper and by recruiting standards since 1992ish, it is truly remarkable what this coach and his staff have accomplished.

P.S. The numbers above also support my opinion held in the past starting with my kicking and screaming of a needed coaching change offensively since 2007. The numbers support the fact that our offensive system was inept compared to the overwhelming majority of other FBS programs and our previous Head Coach (who I still love) allowed it to continuously be inept.

The above numbers are facts and the interpretation of the above are only one guy's opinions.

Dead week and Conte's zinger for Virginia

Augie's comment hits a point.

"If it weren’t for coach Beamer offering me, I’d probably be at the school up the road and I could count the number of wins over my college career on two hands," he said. "So I can’t tell you how much my scholarship means to me. It’s definitely changed my life for the better. And I’d just like to say thank you and I couldn’t imagine my life without being a Hokie. "

Just a little bit of recruiting housekeeping...

I've officially added 2016 signee Silas Dzansi, who will join the Hokies in January after spending a semester at Fork Union, to the 2017 class. That makes for 19 pledges right now. I'm going to put together an updated scholarship needs chart in the coming hours (maybe days - we'll see when I can get to it) to get a hotboard going for the end of the 2017 class and going forward.

**Tunnel Talk** Big visit weekend in the books

Virginia Tech hosted some of its top remaining Class of 2017 targets - along with a handful of commitments - and the weekend couldn't have gone much better. Here's the latest buzz out of Blacksburg.

Starting with the newest commit, from Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy running back Terius Wheatley. He didn't publicize his visit (the whole family has aways been very quiet about the recruiting process in general), so the commit came as a bit of a surprise for that reason. However, VT was the first - and only major - contender for the prep school player, which makes the pledge understandable. The Hokies' coaching staff is excited about him, especially his versatility, even though the initial plan is to use him as a lightning complement to the more thunderous Jalen Holston in the class. Wheatley is far from a finished product (and my personal take is that it wouldn't surprise to see him end up at another spot, because he hasn't shown the natural running back instincts and smoothness yet), but the staff likes his pure speed. He's a project player nonetheless, but one they can truly work with.

The most important visitor, on the other hand, was Chesapeake (Va.) Indian River safety Devon Hunter. There's no need to beat a dead horse in stating why he's such a big deal for VT to land in this class, of course. Things couldn't have gone better for Hunter this weekend, and he's given the coaching staff - and not for the first time during his process - the indication that they'll be very tough to beat for his signature. The issue is that other schools know who the competition is (and will angle the pitches toward taking down the Hokies in his mind), and a few of them will have the opportunity to sway him going forward. Tough to complain about being in a strong pole position, though.

One who saw a change in his recruitment this weekend was Wake Forest (N.C.) defensive tackle Xach Gill. The three-star had been planning to announce a commitment today, but will push it back one more week. The Virginia Tech staff does not feel that the change is because they convinced him to become a Hokie rather than a Tar Heel (which is what today's announcement would have been to announce), but they do think that they're truly in the mix now, instead of looking up at UNC. There's a shot here, but still work to be done in the next seven days.

Nathan Proctor has seemed back-and-forth in how seriously he'll be considering the Hokies, but on the heels of this visit, the Indian Head (Md.) Lackey four-star will keep VT in the mix until the end. He's intrigued by a need for linebackers - and the fact that, even though there are already LBs in the class, none have a similar physical profile to him. That's not to say he's a done deal, but major strides were made here (albeit when playing from behind against Penn State and perhaps even Maryland prior to the visit).

One other player whose list hasn't always included Virginia Tech is Bridgeton (N.J.) four-star athlete Markquese Bell. In fact, he's been close to committing to a couple different Big Ten schools (Michigan over the summer, Ohio State earlier this fall), but got a vibe that neither really prioritized him by the time he was ready to make the call. That could be VT's gain, since they hit it out of the park - probably the most out of any visitor in attendance. A long, tall high school safety who's likely to grow into a linebacker, he fits a specific need for the Hokies as that athletic OLB type, and a potential heir apparent to Tremaine Edmunds.

There has never been a mystery about how much Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood cornerback Ameer Speed likes VT. He's been on multiple unofficial visits to campus, and now his official trip. While the Hokies missed out on his teammate, Quran Hafiz, this summer, Speed is the major prize - and one that I find pretty underrated still, as just the No. 38 corner nationally. Getting to spend time with his friend Aundre Ricardo-Kearney, who will enroll in just a few weeks, made for a good feeling of comfort all weekend, and becoming familiar with the town after so many trips helps, as well.

Victor Dimukeje doesn't give a whole lot away about where his feelings lie, but the coaching staff is cautiously optimistic after his official visit. He's a defensive end for Baltimore Boys Latin, but at an underdeveloped 245 pounds, could easily grow into a defensive tackle (especially because his 6-2 height is a better fit on the inside). This feels like a battle more than any of the above - except maybe Proctor - with other ACC programs still in the mix.

VT has seemed like at least as strong a contender for Stephens City (Va.) Sherando linebacker Dylan Rivers as Penn State - the school he's committed to - for several weeks now. Again, the staff feels good about their chances, though the committed players who were visiting this weekend didn't get a good feel for where he stands. He plans to let the process play out while committed to the Nittany Lions, so if there's a flip, it might not happen until the 11th hour. That's fine with the coaching staff, which will have a much better idea where it stands with other linebackers on the board by the time Rivers wants to make a switch (or officially not make one).

That's the news from the VT end of things, keep an eye out this week for updates with as many of the visitors as we can track down.
