Talking about near misses. BYU is 5-4. All 4 losses by a total of 8 points

UCLA, WVU, Boise State, and Utah are their four losses. All 4 of these losses were by a total of 8 points. That's not 8 points on average, but literally 8 points difference total among all 4 losses. Their last 3 games, they are favored to win by more than 90% in each of the 3 games in which they will likely finish 8-4. I recall on this board a discussion last year with the hiring of Bronco going to UVA, and whether it was a lateral move or a step back. I wrote that it was clearly a step back. BYU has only had 1 losing season in the last 40 years of football. I recall some fans predicting they would not win 6 games with the schedule they had for 2016 (very tough schedule). At the end of the day, I don't think Bronco made a move up, or a move lateral at UVA. It was a step DOWN. UVA's program is not, and has not historically been as good as BYU's. Even on a year when they have a fairly young football team regarding experienced players (not age) and a tough schedule, they still.......almost always get 8 wins. UVA maybe should have considered whoever the guy is at BYU right now instead of Bronco. 4 pretty good wins for BYU this year have been over Miss St., Arizona, Toledo, and Michigan State.

Quick note on Hendon Hooker...

VT's quarterback commit in the 2017 class will take a visit to the University of Oregon this weekend. He'd sort of always planned to take a couple trips, but given that it hadn't happened yet this Fall, seemed like it might not come to fruition.

He's continued to say all the right things about VT, but you still have to be scared when a quarterback-centric school like Oregon (albeit one that hasn't been able to recruit a good high school quarterback in ages, and is having a horrible year) gets a shot at him. Now, there's a pretty good chance that even a Stanford team that's also struggling this season blows the Ducks out this weekend. That would be a good thing for the Hokies - especially since it might be the beginning of the end for Oregon coach Mark Helfrich - if they need the assistance.

It does seem most likely that he ends up a Hokie, and with limited drama. However, the fact that Hooker is looking around at least a bit will be something for the coaches to keep an eye on.

Our Awful Punting Situation

Punting has been really disappointing this season and I believe it has been a factor in keeping the last couple of games closer than what we wanted. We're averaging only 37 yards a punt and if this continues for the last 3 games I could see us losing one of them. Hidden yardage is huge in this game. Making the other team's offense have to travel an extra 10 yards to score is a big deal especially over the course of 60 minutes. Thoughts?

Targeting

I understand the idea behind a targeting penalty, but two things are ridiculous about it.
  1. The call can be made by the replay booth after the play.
  2. It doesn't seem to take into account that the offensive player is lowering his helmet as well.
The fact that you can go to replay to call a penalty is absurd. How about calling holding after the fact or perhaps a late hit out of bounds after the fact?

The NCAA needs to "review" this penalty.

**New** Recruiting Notebook

Looking at the offensive line, where a key situation or two has changed since last week.

Prior to his weekend visit to Michigan, I didn't consider the Wolverines much of a threat for Highland Springs (Va.) four-star Mekhi Becton. The Rivals250 tackle was a take for the Maize and Blue, but not high on their board, so the assumption was that they wouldn't push for him (leaving VT and Virginia Tech still feeling pretty decent about their chances). However, the visit went better than expected in both directions: U-M liked the way he looked physically - especially in comparison to other O-linemen who were visiting - and that inspired them to turn up the heat. The Maize and Blue are perhaps a true threat now.

That doesn't mean he's bound for Ann Arbor, but it definitely does slow down his decision-making process just a bit, which might work against him if Virginia Tech is his ultimate choice. The Hokies are not quite ready to move on from him, but they also don't intend to wait until Signing Day before focusing on other linemen, either. It's a situation to monitor, especially with no trip to Blacksburg planned in any concrete terms.

Other linemen on the board include Courtland (Va.) North Stafford prospect Tyran Hunt, who plans to take his official visit to Virginia Tech for the regular season finale (which could be good for the Hokies, given that UVa seems to be the other prime contender for him at this time - and a head-to-head win could tip the scales a bit). He seems less intent on waiting out the recruiting process, which is a positive for the coaching staff.

Depending on how they feel about those two (remember, there are actually two linemen in the 2017 class for all intents and purposes, with 2016 signee Silas Dzansi taking a prep year at Fork Union but still joining the Hokies, along with two-star Aiden Brown in the 2017 class proper), the net may expand a bit. N.C. State commit Bryson Speas is a teammate of quarterback commit Hendon Hooker at Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley, and had planned to visit Tech along with Hooker prior to flipping his commitment from UVa to the Wolfpack. The Hokies haven't offered, though they've taken a look, and they could move on Speas if the recruiting process plays out in such a way as to necessitate it. Would he make the flip? He's not a particularly forthcoming kid in interviews, so it's tough to say, but Hooker would certainly be in his ear about that decision.
