4 more suits filed vs. NCAA and conferences regarding concussions

Nick Bromberg - Dr. Saturday

Four additional lawsuits were filed against the NCAA and specific member conferences last week regarding concussions.

One of the four suits is led by Ray Griffin, the brother of two-time Ohio State Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin. Ray played defensive end at Ohio State from 1974-77 but the suit does not mention the Buckeyes; only the NCAA and the Big Ten.

Griffin's suit notes "Defendants Big Ten and the NCAA have kept their players and the public in the dark about an epidemic that was slowly killing their athletes" and that "despite knowing for decades of a vast body of scientific research describing the danger of TBIs, Defendants failed to implement procedures to protect Plaintiff and other Ohio State football players from the long-term dangers associated with them. They did so knowingly and for profit."

The four suits bring the total of concussion-related lawsuits against the NCAA to 10 in recent weeks. Six suits were filed in May,though one of the plaintiffs in the six suits removed his name because he was unaware he'd be suing both Penn State and the Big Ten.

Other suits were filed by Derrick Lee, a former Duke player, ex-Tennessee player O.J. Owens and former Michigan Wolverine Steve Strink. Only Lee's suit names his former school in addition to the ACC and NCAA; both Owens (SEC) and Strink (Big Ten) name their conferences and the SEC.

The NCAA did not respond to the AP's request for comment regarding the suits.

NUGGET: Four-star Breyon Gaddy

Sometime today we expect four-star defensive tackle Breyon Gaddy of Virginia Beach (Va.) Bishop Sullivan to release a top five. According to a contact familiar with his recruiting, we do expect Virginia Tech to make the cut.

Tennessee has held a lead for him and I know some folks have asked about Clemson. Based on what we're hearing, Clemson isn't likely to take a defensive tackle in this recruiting cycle. And Tennessee is obviously courting a number of other prospects at the position as well.

In other words, VT has some catching up to do, but nevertheless this is a highly regarded in-state prospect we are still tracking at this time. If there is no decision between now and Labor Day and VT remains in his top five, to belabor the obvious, it sets up the Hokies to get a fall/winter official visit.

Just a heads-up.

We hope everyone is having a great weekend!

****** Weekend Camp Nuggets -- Part 1

The Justin Fuente Football Camp kicked off in Blacksburg on Saturday and Portsmith (Ohio) Sciotoville East offensive guard Blaine Scott (6-4, 299) made the trip in hopes of adding to his growing offers list.

The rising junior already has close to 20 suitors, including Duke, Rutgers, Pitt, Vanderbilt, Miami and North Carolina State.

Scott has taken recent visits to Northwestern, Virginia, Arkansas and Illinois. He picked up an offer from the Wildcats after attending their camp.

It’s not hard to see why Scott’s offer list continues to grow. Other than his obvious size and stature, he showed great quickness in drills where his side-to-side movement was tested.

He spent the majority of the time before lunch with offensive line coach Vance Vice, but assistant coach Charley Wiles got in the mix as well.

Right before the campers broke for lunch, Vice led the group from the indoor practice facility to the outdoor practice field to get some more room. That’s where Scott showed he could hold his own on in pass rush drills.

A local target was also on hand in Blacksburg (Va.) junior running back Cole Beck (6-0, 174). Beck’s lone offer is from Delaware State, but a contact familiar with Beck's recruiting told us he has been drawing interest from ACC schools, including Virginia Tech.

If there’s one thing that sets Beck apart, it’s going to be his speed. During agility drills, he clocked a 4.3-4.4/40.

Sooner rather than later it would not surprise us to see Beck pick up bigger offers.

Rock Hill (S.C) defensive end Eli Adams is another rising junior that camped in Blacksburg on Saturday. While his Rivals profile doesn’t show any offers to date, Adams tweeted that he got an offer from South Carolina on May 6. We cannot confirm whether the Gamecocks' offer is a committable one.

Adams (6-1, 230) is certainly a physical specimen that showed great strength in getting through and around blocks.

The Virginia Tech coaching staff also ran him through some offensive drills and tested his pass-catching ability. He showed quick feet and good route running ability, though he will need to address ball skills in the coming months as college coaches continue to evaluate.

Wally Wilmore, a cornerback out of York (S.C.), is another prospect looking for his first big-time offer. He claims offers from Furman, Western Carolina and Charleston Southern.

Wilmore appeared to be used more as a wide receiver during camp drills, but showed good body control and soft hands.

Time will tell if his skills grow and develop enough to garner an offer the caliber of schools like Virginia Tech, but the potential is there.

Last but not least the highest rated prospect on campus today was Ohio State commit Shaun Wade, a five-star DB out of Jacksonville, Fla.

Wade is the No. 4 cornerback prospect in the country, 16th overall regardless of position. FYI ... at this time we are not tracking Wade's recruitment and do not plan to do so after talking with a source familiar with his recruiting. We fully expect him to sign with the Buckeyes.
