Guys, of VT's 2016 commits, this is the one that might have the highest chance of decommitting and going elsewhere, Indian River (Va.) three-star linebacker Tavante Beckett. I spoke with him a little while ago to get the latest.

Beckett said he still considers himself committed. He told me he feels like he committed to early and wants to take look around more before making sure of a decision. It also sounds like it had a big impact that assistant coaches Bryan Stinespring and Cornell Brown were both let go by the Hokies. Beckett has a good relationship with Zohn Burden, who visited him on the first day the dead period ended, but it doesn't sounds it's like the one Beckett had with Stiney and Cornell.

Now, Beckett is deciding between Maryland and VT. He had considered Rutgers and visiting there this weekend, but has decided now that he won't. Beckett did officially visit Maryland this past weekend and told me "They've got a lot to offer" about four times, though he wouldn't go into specifics. Beckett is also being recruited by former Virginia coaches Mike London and Chris Beatty at Maryland and they also have a strong relationship.

A lot of people think that Jaquan Yulee could have an impact on Beckett and vice versa. But the guy who could have the bigger impact is three-star safety Keyvone Bruton. Remember him? VT decided they didn't like him enough last summer and wouldn't take his commitment multiple times. He committed to Temple instead. But now, he's in with Maryland, too. Beckett said the Terps have told Bruton how much they like him and Beckett and Bruton have talked about how this is their best and maybe only option to play together.

Beckett will be visiting VT officially Jan. 29. He said he's not sure if Yulee will be visiting or not, but made sure to tell me they're doing their recruitments separate from each other. I'm not as sure about Beckett sticking at this point. Honestly, I'd put it at about 60%. The good thing is VT gets the last crack, on the last weekend before signing day. But it will be important to develop a good bond for Beckett with the new coaches.

Some observations of the National Championship game

Clemson represented themselves and the ACC very well all season.

It was a tremendous job putting together a new defense after loosing so many players from the year before.

That Clemson QB took a season's worth of punishment in that one game. I don't know how he did it.

Can't wait until signing day and then later Spring practice with all the returning and new folks in town, coaches and players.

***INsider: Eron Carter Update***

Guys, I spoke earlier with Palatka (Fla.) two-star linebacker Eron Carter, whom VT just offered this past weekend. I personally think we've got Carter a little underrated, at just two stars in the class.

Carter is a kid who just came on VT's radar in the lat couple of weeks. But already, the Hokies think pretty highly of him. Assistant coach Charley Wiles made an in-home visit with him earlier. Carter said they talked about education and how he wants to major in engineering. VT also likes him as an inside linebacker, which is where Carter feels most comfortable.

The big thing with Carter is that he wants to also throw shot putt and discus at whatever school he goes to. The Hokies would certainly let him do that.

This past weekend, Carter took an official to Tulane and the week before he officially visited Air Force. The service academies get a few recruiting exceptions, including being able to take more in their classes and Jan. 8 was another example, even tthough it was a dead period for everyone else. But strangely, the school that seems to stand out a lot is UMASS. Honestly, VT can't figure it out, since UMASS is going back to FCS after leaving the MAC after this past season.

Carter is officially visiting Western Kentucky this weekend and VT Jan. 29. This is a kid who Wiles and the Hokies like a lot and I think can probably pull in during that weekend.

***INsider: Kyle Mayberry Latest***

Guys, I spoke earlier with Booker T Washington (Okla.) three-star cornerback Kyle Mayberry, whom VT made one of the very first offers under coach Justin Fuente. Mayberry has been committed to Kansas since July.

Mayberry told me "I think I’m pretty strong with Kansas." But he said he's still considering VT, Houston and Illinois. But with the Hokies, Mayberry said he hasn't had a lot of conversations with assistant coach Vance Vice, who offered him. Mayberry said he's kept up with Vice on Twitter and that Vice told him they would decide more once the new staff got completely settled and looked at all their options. Basically, it sounds like Mayberry is a backup option at this point for VT. The Hokies think he'll stick with Kansas and aren't devoting a ton of time to him as a result.

Right now, Mayberry plans to visit Kansas officially Jan. 29. He plans on visiting at least one of the other three schools this weekend and perhaps one more visit during the week next week. Mayberry said it will likely be VT and/or Illinois.

Right now, I think Mayberry sticks with Kansas. We'll see if VT entertains him with a visit, but not sure if that will even happen. The Hokies have other DB options and think they have a better chance with others. But we'll see. This one is almost day to day, as VT looks at all its options.

***INsider: Coney Durr Update***

Guys, this is a rather newer name in the mix, but keep an eye on Dutchtown (La.) three-star cornerback Coney Durr. He was offered by VT over the last few weeks, after Galen Scott officially made the transition from the Memphis staff, where he also offered Durr.

Durr committed to Minnesota last month, but has continued to look around a bit. He told me the only other two that he's still considering are VT and North Carolina. Durr visited the Tar Heels officially this past weekend, where he officially received an offer and said that he loved how the players and coaches there treated him. Durr was also on hand for UNC's basketball win over NC State.

Right now, Durr is planning on visiting VT officially this weekend. Scott and assistant coach Torrian Gray actually visited Durr today. Durr told me that they told him they like how versatile he is and could play corner, safety or nickel. "Virginia Tech is traditionally a DB school. They put a lot of guys in the league," Durr told me. He also likes the tradition that the Hokies have.

Durr plans on making a decision in the days following his visit this weekend, so that bodes well for VT. When I asked Durr about Minnesota, he told me, "It’s a good commitment. I committed to them for a reason." But he continues to take visits and VT is the last he'll take before announcing. No date is set, but expect it about a week from now. This one is tough to read, but we'll see how his Hokies official goes.

Final Rivals250 Released

Guys, the final Rivals250 rankings for the class of 2016 were released a little while ago. Quite a bit of movement.

As far as VT goes, the only guy to really be aware of is safety Marlon Character, ranked No. 239. The Hokies were in well with Character last fall before he committed to Auburn in November. He's become far more receptive to VT since all the coaching moves and is slated to officially visit VT this weekend.

RIP VTSmitty

It is with great sadness in my heart that I have the unfortunate responsibility of announcing the passing of a dear friend of mine and a long time poster that all of you knew well. I have known Todd for a number of years and he was a friend like very few ever know. I truly hope that many of you here had the opportunity to meet such a great man and a good and genuine soul.

You are and will be sorely missed, my friend.

Jinx continues

It looks like we're getting screwed yet again. This coming weekend is supposed to be a HUGE recruiting weekend for us, and a major winter storm is forecast. All this crazy warm weather we had this winter, but we get hammered anyway. We'll probably be lucky if ANY of the recruits are able to make it. This one stroke of bad luck could have a real impact, not just on this year's recruiting class, but the product we put on the field in a couple years if we end up missing on some of the defensive recruits that we have a real shot at. Maybe the weather will turn in our favor, but it doesn't look like it right now.

Time for a backup plan (ie- Fri/Sat snow)

Does the staff have a backup plan for the imminent snow storm? I see it's predicted that Blacksburg will see 8-12" starting Friday at 2am and not stopping until Saturday at 7pm. A total of 11-15" through Sat if things go as predicted.

From what I saw they don't know where the "sweet spot" of the storm will hit just yet but further East had higher prediction totals.

I'm not sure what they could do; but now would be a good time to think outside of the box if you want to get those kids to Blacksburg this weekend. Perhaps have a few central locations in key areas that kids/parents could park and pick up groups in a bus or something better able to handle snow? I don't know, maybe there aren't any reasonable or rational options when it comes to 15" of snow.

I'm pretty sure many of these kids/parents (at least those from the South) don't know how to drive in the snow. I live by the beach and I can assure you that people here don't have a clue.

I hate to be a downer, but at this point I don't see a lot of kids making the trip this weekend. Would they entertain the 29th being a super weekend or would that be too taxing on the staff? Perhaps that's not even possible because the kids have other schools to attend on the 29th?

What luck. Hopefully this is one of those times where the meteorologists are way off and things don't develop like they predict. This just doesn't look like one of those times.

***INsider: AJ Dillon Latest***

Guys, I got a call earlier from Lawrence Academy (Mass.) 2017 four-star running back AJ Dillon that he was offered today by Notre Dame. Dillon is one of Virginia Tech's most recent offers, that coming last Wednesday.

Dillon now has 10 offers, including from Maryland, Syracuse, Virginia and Boston College. Assistant coach Zohn Burden made the offer for the Hokies and Dillon said he called Burden last week when the offer came. Dillon said their conversation was fairly brief and was simply "getting to know each other."

With VT overall, it's still a little early. Dillon said he's always been aware of the Hokies, going back to when Michael Vick was there. Dillon told me, "They're always good, competitive in the ACC and nationally. That’s a great program and I look forward to getting to know them more and the staff there."

But honestly, everything changed in Dillon's recruitment when Notre Dame offered today. Dillon is a legacy, as his grandfather, Thom Gatewood, who was recently elected into the college football hall of fame, last year, played at Notre Dame. Dillon told me, "Having my grandfather there, playing there, it’s been a part of my life since before I played football. I don’t think it’s sunk in, but it’s really nice to get that offer." Dillon said that's a unique place to get football and academics and he went to two games this season, both road games, when ND played at UVA and BC.

We'll see how this one plays out, but Dillon hasn't visited and the odds went waaaay down when Notre Dame offered. That's the odds on favorite now. If Dillon visits this spring or summer (no visits planned now), that could change things, but I'll be surprised if he's not an Irish by May, when he hopes to commit.
