SI: Fuller Family Article

SI's Pete Thamel wrote a nice article published in last week's magazine on the Fuller family.

It's live online today - http://www.si.com/nfl/2016/04/13/nfl-draft-kendall-fuller-family-kyle-corey-vincent

Interesting stuff, such as how Kendall dialed Clemson to commit, but hung up while it was ringing and committed to VT two weeks later.

And how Kendall also had micro-fracture surgery, in addition to meniscus surgery. Micro-fracture has historically been a tough one for athletes to recover from, which is probably why he's in the 2nd round now.

VT Facilities Including English Field Renovations

The VT Board of Visitors Minutes sometimes provide interesting things...this is one of those times.

Hey everyone,

I have a short update on QB's from an unnamed source close to some of the players. Dwayne Lawson is the QB front-runner in spring practice.

I don't any any more information than that, but if I learn of anything new, I'll be sure to let you know.

***INsider: Kalil Pimpleton Latest***

Guys, I alluded to it during the chat on Friday that I had spoken to Muskegon (Mich.) athlete Kalil Pimpleton. Today, I finally got the chance, though to speak with him at length.

Pimpleton was offered last month by VT. The Hokies like him as a true athlete, meaning they want him to return kicks, play some slot receiver and even some running back. He visited VT for the first time, along with a number of his high school teammates, on Tuesday.

First off, it sounds like Pimpleton and his teammate, big 2018 OL AJ Reed, who got offered by the Hokies last week, are very close. Pimpleton went on for a bit on how he loved how VT offered Reed. But with Pimpleton himself, he doesn't like how far away from home it is, which is a drawback, but said he does like the potential he could have there.

During the visit, Pimpleton said he didn't get much of a chance to speak with coach Justin Fuente. But Fuente told him to give him a call, so Pimpleton did and it sounds like that conversation went very well. "I love them," Pimpleton told me. "They all said the same thing, especially Coach Fuente."

It sounds like Pimpleton is getting a lot of MAC interest. He plans on getting to Kent State and Toledo soon. But the big thing here for the Hokies, as mentioned in the INsider on Reed, is that Pimpleton is among the group, along with Andrew Ward, Reed and Jacorey Sullivan, that plans on returning to VT April 23 for the spring game.

***INsider: Mekhi Becton Latest***

As always, what's posted here, STAYS HERE. Don't de-value your own subscription by giving away information to others who don't pay like you do. It's also a violation of our terms of service and will result in the termination of your subscription.

Guys, I spoke earlier with Highland Springs (Va.) three-star offensive tackle Mekhi Becton. He visited VT unofficially on Thursday and Friday with his coach, who took part in the Hokies' coaching clinic.

Becton has 14 offers, but VT is not one of them. He does have offers from schools like UVA, West Virginia, Louisville, Maryland, Missouri, Pitt and others.

Before last week, Becton said he'd visited VT a few times, including a visit with his team last spring and he participated in camp last year. With the visit last week, Becton said he did tour campus a bit, looked around the facility and spent quite a bit of time talking with coach Justin Fuente and assistant coach Vance Vice. He said he also liked seeing how things are being renovated.

As far as where he stands with an offer, Becton said he isn't sure. He told me that Vice and Fuente said they like his film and plan to visit him during the open period, which means he'll be one of the next up for discussion for an offer. Becton also told me, "They’ve always been a dream school of mine." So keep that in mind.

To this point, because the Hokies haven't offered, it sounds like UVA is in the lead. Becton told me that staff is who he has the best relationship with. He said they "show him the most love" and call and check on his family just about every day.

No more visits planned as of now, but he wants to see Tennessee, Florida State, Notre Dame and Syracuse next. We'll also get a look at Becton this weekend. He plans on participating in the Nike camp Saturday and the Rivals Camp Sunday, both of which are in Charlotte.

Today's practice - 4/12

Hey guys! So today it seems that we are learning just a little bit more about the quarterback situation and Justin Fuente's new offense in general. Here are some takeaways from today's practice:

-- There has been very little said about quarterbacks this spring, but Fuente noted that Brenden Motley and Jerod Evans are so far the frontrunners.
-- There doesn't seem to be a frontrunner at the tailback position but according to Zohn Burden Shai McKenzie has dropped weight and looks back to his normal self and there was a lot of praise for Sam Rogers and his work ethic.
-- Greg Stroman has moved to cornerback and is also taking reps as a kick and punt returner.
-- Fuente will allow students into the second half of next Tuesday's practice -- media will be allowed in as well.

There will be a LOT more coverage coming your way from today's practice coming later tonight and tomorrow!

***4.14 VT INsider Chat Details***

Guys, this week I've gotta set our chat for 12:30 pm ET tomorrow (Thursday). I have some conference calls I can't get out of, but as always, I don't ever want to miss one of our chats. Guys, I just spoke a few minutes ago with Battlefield (Va.) three-star DE Brailyn Franklin, who just picked up his sixth offer today, from Old Dominion. He also has offers from VT, Temple, Kansas, Marshall and Maryland.

Franklin and a handful of his teammates visited the Hokies March 24, for their second practice of the spring. Franklin told me he liked sitting in on the linebackers meeting with defensive coordinator Bud Foster, hanging out with his teammates and watching VT practice. Franklin said he also enjoyed talking one-on-one with coach Justin Fuente on the trip.

Overall, Franklin said nothing has changed in how he views the Hokies. He always likes talking with Foster and told me, "I like it a whole lot. It’s like I’m at home."

The other one that seems to have his attention is Maryland. Franklin said he visited there a few days after he was at VT. He spoke at length with assistant coach Mike London and told me he liked how London was "down to earth." Franklin got his offer from ODU today while on a visit there. He didn't get into a lot of specifics there, but told me they have a lot going for them there.

Franklin said he has no dates for other visits, but wants to see Temple and Maryland next month. If I had to say right now, I do think Franklin is a slight lean for Maryland, but not by a lot. You can also see that in him making a return visit this soon there. He also plans to participate next week at the Nike Camp in northern Virginia and April 30 at the Rivals camp in New Jersey.

UNC NCAA Playoff Loss

After all of the swipes I have taken at UNC for their massive cheating scandal and the NCAA for their negligence in the handling of the same this is going to seem a little strange to some of you folks but here goes:
I feel very sorry for the UNC BB players for their recent loss. They played their heart out and I can't help but believe that they were screwed by the officiating. The game would have and should have been won by UNC had the stripes been just a little more fair in their officiating. In my opinion, it stunk.
I still hate the school for what they have done and how they have handled the situation. I don't care for their coach because I believe that he is loaded with plausible deniability for protection and will use it regardless of the truth.
I haven't changed my feeling about the NCAA who is either living in a vacuum or just too selfish to care. A UNC loss in the finals of the playoffs would not change the money the NCAA derives from the playoffs but a UNC win would have been another thing altogether. They are already catching a lot of deserved flak for the way they have handled a situation that would now have produced a national champion. The loss actually helped the NCAA dodge a bigger bullet. Just my opinion guys.

***INsider: Eric Crosby Visit Details***

As always, what's posted here, STAYS HERE. Don't de-value your own subscription by giving away information to others who don't pay like you do. It's also a violation of our terms of service and will result in the termination of your subscription.

Guys, as you all probably know by now, Ocean Lakes (Va.) four-star defensive tackle Eric Crosby visited VT this weekend. Crosby is ranked No. 124 in the Rivals250 and has named a top five of VT, Tennessee, Alabama, Clemson and NC State. He's also announced a decision date of April 22, the day before the Hokies' spring game.

First off, Crosby text me a bit yesterday, just to tell me he got to VT. But he's not doing interviews and is laying low for the next few days, because everyone is blowing up his phone right now.

BUT, I've talked to a few Hokies staff sources, who have given me a few details. First off, Crosby got to VT a little after lunch yesterday with his mom. He just left VT in the past hour. And it sounds like the visit went well. Crsoby tweeted this out yesterday:
Login to view embedded media And it sounds like he had a great time. I'm told he spent a lot of the time hanging out with Ocean Lakes linebacker Tre Hubbard, who also visited with Crosby. Hubbard will be a walk-on this fall and will be visiting the Hokies again for the spring game. I had one of my staff sources tell me about Crosby, "Oh yeah, he had a good night."
Login to view embedded media At this point, Crosby might be THE top priority for VT, along with his teammate, Rivals100 running back Khalan Laborn. I had another Hokies staff source tell me, "We’re giving it all we’ve got."

The best news from this trip is that the staff believes it has gained some ground. For anyone who has asked me over the past two months, you know I've said that Tennessee has been the favorite. And every time I've checked with my VT staff sources over the past two months, they've told me they thought the same. Today, when I asked, they told me they believe the odds have gone from 60/40 in favor of the Volunteers to 50/50 between Tennessee and the Hokies.

But there's still a ton of uncertainty with this kid from the VT side. I had one staff source tell me, "We’ll see what happens. He's just hard to read." The staff has told me they believe his mom had a great time.

The other thing to keep in mind here is that while April 22 is the day that Crosby has set aside to announce, it likely won't be over then. I've gotten that impression some before and it was reiterated to me today by my VT staff sources. I had a staff source tell me they believe that it's not over even if he chooses the Hokies in less than two weeks. "I still think regardless, he’s gonna be a kid that will be recruited all the way to signing day," one source told me. "He's a kid who will take all five officials."

So while there was likely some ground made up this weekend, which was VERY vital. This one likely isn't over by a long shot. Crosby will continue to be recruited, so don't over read the April 22 recruiting date.

When I hear anything from Crosby himself, you all will be the first to know as always. But in the meantime, I'll be gathering as much intel from those around him and from plenty of other sources.

As always, what's posted here, STAYS HERE. Don't de-value your own subscription by giving away information to others who don't pay like you do. It's also a violation of our terms of service and will result in the termination of your subscription.

Guys, I talked earlier with Muskegon (Mich) 2018 OL Antwan "AJ" Reed. He was in the group from Muskegon that visited earlier in the week. And Wednesday, VT gave Reed an offer.

Very big group from Muskegon that visited, as I mentioned in an earlier INsider. And those guys are all being recruited by new assistant coach Brian Mitchell. Aside from a few Scot Loeffler connections, the Hokies have never really recruited Michigan before, so expect that to change now.

The group participated in a seven-on-seven tournament Saturday and Sunday in Pittsburgh, then went to Penn State Monday and VT Tuesday. Reed said he liked walking around campus, seeing the indoor facility, hanging out in the players' lounge and sitting in on some of the positional meetings. "Everybody down there presents themselves well," Reed told me.

Reed said he liked his Penn State visit a lot, too. He told me he thought everything there looked new, which he liked. But he honestly didn't go into a ton of detail on that trip. I will say, the only other visit Reed said he's taken was to Michigan State for a basketball game earlier this year against Penn State. So the Spartans are definitely a big player here and will continue to be one.

I will say, I asked which coach he's talked to that he liked most and he told me it was coach Justin Fuente. So that's a positive. He and most of the Muskegon guys are also planning to get back to VT April 23 for the spring game. It's early with Reed, but the Hokies are off to a very, very strong start.

Wrestling Commits

VT has a couple of in-state commits coming in this fall. Anthony Helm is the Times-Dispatch Metro wrestler of the year. He finished second in the 5A state tournament as a FRESHMAN, ending his career as a four time Conference 12, four time 5A south region and three time 5A state champion. He had a 49-1 record as a senior, with 30 pins. He is in the 285-pound class.

Also coming in is 120-pounder Joey Prata. He is a three time VISAA state champion, two time National Prep champion, and four time National Prep all American.

Interestingly, Helm was quoted as saying that he hasn't always been a fan of VT. So why is he coming to Blacksburg? I think it's pretty obvious. WINNING!! That's how you get top recruits.

***INsider: Mike Tverdov On VT***

As always, what's posted here, STAYS HERE. Don't de-value your own subscription by giving away information to others who don't pay like you do. It's also a violation of our terms of service and will result in the termination of your subscription.

Guys, I spoke a little earlier with Union (NJ) three-star defensive end Mike Tverdov. He just visited VT last Sunday and has offers from VT, Duke, BC, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, Central Florida and Rhode Island. Last weekend, Tverdov went to Duke and North Carolina both on Saturday, then spent all day Sunday in Blacksburg.

It sounds like Tverdov didn't give the Hokies staff a heads up that he was visiting. He said most of the staff was out, but that he spent over an hour talking with defensive coordinator Bud Foster and about 30 minutes talking with coach Justin Fuente. Tverdov said he loved seeing Lane Stadium and talking to both coaches. "They did a good job on short notice," Tverdov said.

Assistant coach Brian Mitchell is Tverdov's primary recruiter. He told me all the coaches have talked to him about all the sets of brothers that have played at VT. And that seems to really have appealed to Tverdov because of the family aspect. Tverdov already plans on getting back April 23 for the Hokies' spring game.

Tverdov has no list of favorites, but said he wants to put one out in a few weeks. Safe to say VT will make the cut, as the Hokies are pretty high on the list. Tverdov plans on visiting Rutgers next weekend for the spring game there. This is a kid who physically has improved a ton in the past year as he's grown. He has a very thick neck as a result. Tverdov camped at VT last July and looks much better overall now. Interesting to see how his Rutgers visit goes, but I think the Hokies might be in the lead here at this point.
