A Question on "Fuente One Month In"

Jason, when you asked about Fuente's Goals for the state of VA in recruiting he brought up "Coaches coaching Coaches". having Coaches like Foster actually go out and speak at clinics.

I'm left wondering, how involved was VT with having our Coordinators and Positional Coaches speak at High School clinics. Could this boost our profile in the 757 area more? It seems like the past 5-6 years the Southside of Hampton Roads has had a bit of a disdain with sending their kids to VT. Might VT's lack of involvement with Player clinics and Summer Camps in the 757 have contributed to it.

Thoughts?

Guys, with our site conversions coming, I wanted to announce that this is how we'll be posting our podcast each week. Our goal with the new improvements is for the site to be even more interactive and that means more with the message boards and the ability to now embed more platforms on the message board. That said, here's this week's podcast:

Lots going on this week, as Virginia Tech is coming off a pair of impressive wins to start the ACC basketball season. What can we make of the wins? And can the Hokies keep it up?

In football, coach Justin Fuente now has his coaching staff complete with the official announcements of Brad Cornelsen and Galen Scott. What do the additions mean and how will they fit in? Plus, new recruiting news, including Rivals250 target Jaquan Yulee, who just came back on the market.

Publisher Jason Stamm is joined by senior writer Doug Bowman and former Virginia Tech defensive tackle Derrick "Skip" Hopkins to break down these topics and more in installment No. 41, of our podcasts. We'll be conducting our podcasts every week during the football and basketball seasons, recapping the latest and giving you plenty of what to look for.

New Defensive Staff Titles

Guys, we've pretty much known for a while that Galen Scott was likely going to join Fuente at VT and would coach linebackers. And honestly, because that's a demotion in some ways for Scott, who was defensive coordinator at Memphis, I wondered how that would work. Fuente announced new titles for both Bud Foster and Scott. Foster is now associate head coach, while Scott is assistant head coach.

My first thought is that he's trying to keep both coaches happy, but what do you think of the move?

Attention NOVA Beer Loving Hokies - Help Fight Cancer

Hi everyone,

It's time to help some Hokie alumni. Some of you may have heard about Matt & Kerri Rose, the owners at Forge Brew Works in Lorton. Unfortunately Kerri, who is a brand new mom, is sadly now fighting stage 4 stomach cancer. Yesterday, 20 local breweries got together at Forge’s neighboring brewery, Fair Winds Brewing Company, to brew a special Belgian ale called Kerri’s Cure. On January 29th, the beer will be available on tap at all 20 of these local breweries (list in the NBC link below) and all proceeds from the sale of that beer will go directly to the family to help with health costs.

Here’s a link to the story NBC did yesterday: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/l...t-Brewers-Wife-Battling-Cancer-364577711.html

If you’re looking for more information and updates on Kerri, the family has a GoFundMe page set up that she posts health updates to: Login to view embedded media

A little love for VT women's basketball

Our women's basketball team is 13-1 with 11 straight wins, including a 14-point win at #8 Tennessee. They are posting some ridiculous defensive numbers (e.g., BC only scored 8 points in the second half last game). I know men's sports get most of the headlines, but keep an eye out for our women's basketball team. They have a really good shot at the NCAA tournament this year.

I really like Bennett, but . . .

i think it was pretty classless on his part to make a comment to Devin Wilson when they passed in the line after the game.

"Bennett was visibly upset with the officials after the no-call, said his frustration stemmed from a no-call prior to Perrantes’ final shot.

“I think [Devin Wilson], I think he thought they were up three. When we went through the line, I said ‘you thought you were up three.’ He just smiled but he was trying to foul us to put us on the line, so we couldn’t hit a three to send it into overtime.

“It was right in front of our bench. He took a swipe, and I couldn’t see when London went in, I got blocked, but [Wilson], in my eyes, he tried to intentionally put him at the free throw line. In my book, that should’ve been called but we were fortunate to get back into it."

Excuse me, coach, but didn't you just say "I couldn't see when London went in, I got blocked"?

***INsider: Nate Johnson Update***

Full story coming, but as always, what's posted here, STAYS HERE. Don't de-value your own subscription by giving away information to others who don't pay like you do. It's also a violation of our terms of service and will result in the termination of your subscription.

Guys, I spoke just a few minutes ago with Independence (Tenn.) three-star WR Nate Johnson, who was offered today by Virginia Tech. He's been committed to Michigan since he took an official visit there Dec. 11.

Right off the bat, Johnson told me "I'm still 100 percent committed with them." He loved his visit and said he felt close to all the coaches when he was on his visit.

That said, Johnson is still keeping the door open for others. He said the four he is still now considering are VT, Penn State, Vanderbilt and Miami. Johnson had an official set to Northwestern, but he's now swapped that for the Nittany Lions. New offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen made the offer for the Hokies. Johnson said he'd talked to Cornelsen when he was at Memphis, but feels like Cornelsen is on him now because he has a better chance to get him, being at VT. Johnson said he hasn't had a lot of contact, but is talking with his parents about setting an official to Blacksburg.

Right now, it sounds like Johnson is probably 80% to Michigan. The last quote I have from him is " If I decommit from Michigan, which I won’t, I’ll definitely hold off until signing day." He's expecting an in-home visit from Notre Dame next week and a likely offer, which could change things even more. But Penn State is definitely one he's still interested in. Assistant coach Josh Gattis from PSU visited Johnson before the current dead period and Johnson talked a little about him.

Honestly, I think VT has a shot, but only if they can get a visit from him. And that's probably 50/50, because if Notre Dame does indeed offer, he could use an official there instead of VT. But I like the shot by Cornelsen. Expect more offers from Tennessee, since that's an area Cornelsen and the new coaches are familiar with and it's not that far from Blacksburg. But with this one, the odds don't sound big right now. We'll see if he does visit.

***INsider: Ty Pigrome***

Full story coming, but as always, what's posted here, STAYS HERE. Don't de-value your own subscription by giving away information to others who don't pay like you do. It's also a violation of our terms of service and will result in the termination of your subscription.

Guys, I just got off the phone with Clay (Ala.) three-star athlete Ty Pigrome, who was offered by VT today. He was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Alabama. I've already been asked why Pigrome is only three stars and much of that is because of his size and the system he plays in. He's been labeled as a product of the spread system, though he's obviously mastered it, with over 4,000 yards passing this season. Pigrome is also only 5'10" or 5'11" which is a little short for quarterback. But he's a dynamic athlete.

The Hokies have offered as an athlete. But with them already being set at quarterback, it's likely that Pigrome would be a receiver at VT. He was offered by both assistant coach Holmon Wiggins and coach Justin Fuente. They'd recruited him and offered him at Memphis, but had to make sure they wanted to offer him at VT.

Pigrome said Wiggins has visited him a couple of times in the past month, while he's only spoken to Fuente by phone since meeting him at camp during the summer. Pigrome told me, "Me and coach Wiggins have always had a good relationship." The biggest thing is that Pigrome wants to play in another spread offense.

He has two dozen offers, and all but Indiana and Missouri have offered him on offense. Those two have offered as a defensive back, so he's not really considering them. The four on top right now are VT, Purdue, Tulane and New Mexico. Right now, Pigrome plans on visiting Tulane Jan. 15, VT Jan. 22 and Purdue Jan. 29. He doesn't say a whole lot, but I get the sense he's very intrigued by VT. Don't be surprised, if that visit goes well enough, that he might not take that final visit. He hasn't ruled out a fifth visit, to New Mexico.
