VT misses the top eight for Muhsin Muhammad

There was a time when he looked reasonably likely to be among the first commits in the class (and the Hokies were first to offer him):

The staff sort of moved along after landing the receiver commits they already have, so it's unlikely they'd have put in the effort to land him. Still, would it be a better look for them to have used some of the effort they've wasted in Alabama and Mississippi to at least make the top eight for a kid from a pipeline area (and at a very talented school), for perception's sake? I definitely think so.

The stream of offers in Texas hasn't slowed down, and somewhat surprisingly after the departure of Tyrone Nix they're still hanging around the Deep South a bit. We'll see if the strategy shifts to something a little more likely to pay off.

Kentucky Derby

What a travesty! Maximum Security gets spooked by 150,000 screaming fans, drifts over two lanes, jockey brings him back, wins the Derby. The 2nd place horse was not impeded but in typical fashion nowadays, he was the beneficiary of a judgement call and declared the winner.

He may say he won the Kentucky Derby, but everyone knows better. He got beat, fair and square.

Tunnel Talk EXTRA: A transfer portal situation to keep an eye on

Remember when Virginia Tech lost an elite dual-threat quarterback from home turf to Florida early in the last recruiting cycle? It may actually be easy to forget, because Richmond Henrico three-star Jalon Jones picked Florida so early in the process that we mentally moved along. Well, after one semester in Gainesville, it seems he's one moving along.

Jones attended St. Frances Academy as a junior before heading back to Henrico in his senior year - a move back home - and another move back home may make sense for him.

Virginia Tech's quarterback depth chart got a boost when Hendon Hooker decided against transferring (while the Hokies added Knox Kadum in the 2019 class), but it's still a little sparse. A player looking to get back to the Commonwealth, a school that needs help at his position (in terms of depth and top-end talent)... it should be a match made in heaven.

The situation is very fresh - his entry into the transfer portal just leaked this afternoon - but you can bet on the Hokies pushing to get consideration from the 6-3, 200-pounder. Certainly they (and I personally agree) evaluate him as at least a four-star talent, and a quarterback whisperer like the Justin Fuente/Brad Cornelsen combo has been in the past may be the perfect fit.

I've reached out to Jones himself for comment, and we shall see what the response is (if any - I typically don't expect kids already in college to get back to me, and consider it a bonus if they do).
