2017 R100 LB talks coaching carousel

I caught up with 2017 Rivals100 LB Justin Foster the other day. We talked about all the coaching moves and how they affect him. Foster talked specifically about Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech. It seems like the Sooners are doing a great job with him because he's already said he would like to take an official visit to Oklahoma. Foster would also like to visit Florida, North Carolina, LSU, and Alabama in the spring.

Virginia Tech

10 Best Strength and Conditioning Programs in College Football
Number 5 Virginia Tech

Hokies football is known for defense and explosive special teams. Since the late 1980s Frank Beamer has built a tough program that is always willing to hit hard and drive through a ball-carrier.

The Hokies use a 10,000-square-foot facility to wear down their players, and they have constantly remained on the cutting edge of speed and strength development.

Mike Gentry has served as the strength coach for 22 years, and ever since he took over the program, they have been among the nation’s elite.

***Darnell Ewell Update***

Guys, this was probably the biggest reason why I went to Lynchburg Saturday for the state championships, to see Lake Taylor (Va.) 2017 Rivals250 DT Darnell Ewell. This is a kid who I heard Rivals analyst Mike Farrell call 'an animal' so many times this spring at the Rivals camp that I lost count.

Ewell has said for a while that VT is a school he's very high on. But this time (of course he just lost in the state title game) he didn't give away a lot. He kept saying his recruitment is 'a surprise.' Based on talking with him as often as I have before, though, the Hokies are firmly in this one. They just need to get him on campus for junior day and really push. Ewell should without question be one of VT's top priorities for the 2017 class. He's one of the hardest-nosed players I've ever seen, right up there with Wyatt Teller. Ewell goes balls to the wall on every play and faces double teams on almost every play, too.

The other school that Ewell would mention was Alabama. The Tide have really ramped up their efforts on him and that might be the biggest one to watch right now. I expect him to visit both schools for junior days, along with others, but VT has a good shot right now. They've gotta do some work to make it a great shot.

Anyone see on the UNC rivals site, the map of Virginia and mining?

The state of Virginia for top talent? They, the Tarheels only have 3 of the Top 20 in NC committ d to them....looks like Clemson mined the state of NC pretty well as they may end up with the top recruit a long with 4 others in the top 10 in NC....I thought it funny they can't recruit there own state, why would they think they could raid VA? Here's hoping Fuentes will lock down the Tidewater and Richmond...If he can do that Tech will be back where I want it to be....in the Top 10 in the nation....

Wayne Davis Update

Guys, I alluded to it on the chat on Friday, but I interviewed Lake Taylor (Va.) four-star CB Wayne Davis after the state title game yesterday. This is a kid who VT basically had no interest in six months ago, though he was very interested in the Hokies at that point. But with Myles Wolfolk's decommitment, VT has been trying to get back in on him. Assistant coach Torrian Gray even visited the school for practice earlier last week.

I can tell you though, after talking to Davis, he is 100% solid with Ohio State and has no interest in VT.

Guys, I spoke just a short while ago with Cumberland (Va.) OL TJ Jackson, the most recent commitment for Virginia Tech. He told me he actually committed last night, though it was reported everywhere this morning.

Jackson said he already had offers from NC State, Norfolk State and VMI. He committed yesterday because the offer from the Hokies just came yesterday. VT reached out to him over the summer, after they heard about his height. Jackson took unofficial visits to James Madison and VT just before his school year started, to see practice at both. He said he kept in touch with Stacy Searels and Cornell Brown, but neither offered. New coach Justin Fuente visited him at his school last Monday and assistant coach Vance Vice attended one of Jackson's basketball games last week.

If you're wondering how Jackson went so far under the radar, there's a couple of reasons. First, he's at his third school in two years. Originally from Cumberland County, he transferred to Fuqua (Va.) for his freshman and sophomore years, then transferred to Wesleyan Christian Academy (NC) last fall. He went back to Cumberland in the spring. Also, Cumberland has been dreadful in football, with no more than three wins since an 8-3 season in 2008 at the Class 1A level. Jackson said the team this season went from about 50 kids to start to 28 for various reasons by the end of the season.

Jackson said he loved talking to Fuente and Vice. He likes how they work with their players and develop them. Jackson, who's always been the tallest in his grade since he can remember, has grown about five inches since his sophomore year. He plans on officially visiting VT Jan. 29 and signing on signing day to arrive next fall.
