Ohio State Offense ranked Better than it's Defense, both top 20 in America

Ok, so one of the mantras I have seen on several sites now is that Ohio State won this thing with defense, so incredibly..........because they SUPPOSEBLY won the title with great D, then we make the leap and giant jump that Coach Frank Beamer is good to go and we are all set because his philosophy is spot on. Now.......go to TSL and ESPN to read the comments from some Hokie fans if you do not believe this is true. There are statements like this.

FACT 1 Ohio State finished ranked 19th in America in Defense. It finished ranked 9th in Total O. So once again, as I have pointed out countless times on this board over the years.... a team 99% of the time must have a good O and a good D to win the title. The one exception since 1960 was Ohio State in 2003ish (forget the exact year, but the Miami game) in which Ohio State was basically given the game by the officials, but this was the one outlier in which their Total O ranked around 70th in the nation, but their rush O was top 30 and their D was basically number one in about every major category and it was truly a defense for the ages. This year, OSU's offense actually ranked higher than the D, but the fact is, both their O and D were very good.

Congrats to Ohio State and my point is.....at least statistically, OSU this year actually had a better O than D, and their O finished top 10 in America to go along with a top 20 defense. Hopefully, most VT fans can understand the difference in a solid top 20 Defense and a Total O ranked about 10th to 20th in America compared to 70th to 100th in America.

Early ACC predictions for next season?

With FSU having lost three underclassmen and could likely lose two more, that team will likely lose it's strangle hold on the conference next year. They had Jameis to save them multiple times, with him gone they'll have to find a new identity on offense. Taking an early look at what teams bring back, though most teams still don't know as underclass declarations will keep coming over the next few weeks, I would not be surprised if the Coastal comes down to the Techs as it always seems to. Duke will have something to say about it but I've got my money on VT or GT with all both teams return. The Atlantic will be very interesting. Spring practice in Tallahassee will be as intriguing as I can remember. They've got loads of 4 and 5 stars on the roster but they are all unproven at this level, 4 new OL, new QB, at least 5 new starters on defense, likely more. Clemson loses a lot on defense but they might have the best returning QB in the conference with Watson and that counts for a lot. They've had good defensive recruiting recently, will be interesting to see how their new faces on defense come together. I still can't see NCSU, Wake, or Cuse being able to challenge FSU, 'Ville or Clem but BC may be able to pull an upset over one of the top 3 in that division. It's really really early but I like VT's chances next year to get back to 10 wins and possibly the ACC title game. After FSU domination the past two years, looks like the ACC wheel of destiny will be back in effect this fall. Anyone else have early thoughts about next season?

Looking most forward to seeing this Hokie hit the field...

Travon McMillian. Anxious to see how he fits in with the VT offense, I think that when his time comes to get touches he's really going to make a lot of big plays for the Hokies. Watched him play many games in high school; his speed, versatility, and ability to lower his shoulder / keep his legs moving through contact to tough out extra yards will add a different dimension that the Hokies could probably use in their offense. I'm sure as a fan base people will focus in on the newer recruits that the coaches are trying to reel in, but McMillian should be a big-time weapon for the VT offense.

I posted a thread pretty much talking about the same thing around this time last year, that I was looking forward to McMillian and Greg Stroman suiting up to play since I watched both of them play in high school (even when both of their schools played eachother). I don't follow VT heavily but I could see that Stroman certainly made his presence felt, especially in the bowl game. I think McMillian would have been ready to make an impact as a freshman had he not been redshirted, but from what I recall the Hokies had quite a bit of depth at RB, and the QB competition was already deep. I like his move to RB though, and with that redshirt year I think we will see a finely tuned Travon McMillian ready to move onto the scene. Get him in open space, coach!

Shout Out to Trey Edmunds

I didn't see it mentioned anywhere else, but on the TD pass to Malleck, Trey picked up two rushers at the same time that were blitzing around the corner straight into Brewer.

Even though Malleck was wide open, if Trey didn't pick up both of those players, I'm not sure Brewer could have made that pass.

That was a great team win and I'm glad to see Trey back in action.

After seeing thru the SEC media bias BS...

I think my correct (and not ESPN bias driven) top 10 would probably be...

1) Oregon
2) TCU
3) Ohio State (what they've done with backup QBs this season is amazing)
4) Clemson (see Ohio State)
5) Alabama
6) Michigan State
7) Baylor
8) Georgia
9) Boise State
10) Florida State

I'd like to take credit for calling last night's Ohio State win, but the truth is, anyone with half a brain could see that one coming from a mile away if they'd care to open their eyes, since the entire SEC West outside of Arkansas looked like pure garbage last week. The score probably should've been a lot worse (OSU was their own worst enemy in the first half), and likely would have been a lot worse if Barrett were still at QB.

2015 OL

McLaughlin, Teller and Conte are sure to be returning starters. Most people seem to have Gallo tagged at center. Who is the 5th?

Hansen had way more PT last year than anyone else on this list- and even Gallo. But he's pretty small.

Pfaff seemed headed towards being a contributor last season but was injured in the first game.

Osterloh is by far the biggest guy we have- he outweighs the next biggest by 20 lbs. But people seem to be down on him- looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane?

And no matter who it is, will the OL be any good? Or continue to be a liability?

Anyone watch the all american games this past week?

I caught the semper fidelis game live, recorded the under armour game and watched that later. Didn't get to see the Army game. Thought Lawson looked pretty good. He's very raw still but extremely athletic for a guy his size, must get thicker and fill out that frame. He fumbled a play, didn't feel the pressure but overall I though he looked like a 2-3 year collegiate starter. At VT I'd be shocked if he doesn't redshirt with all the QBs coming back. Couple years from now he could be special. Mook Reynolds look solid, got called for PI 3 times if i recall correctly. Two of them were nit picky calls but overall he showed his good hips and he came up in run support a few times, looks very much the part of a future VT corner, will also likely be a 2-3 year starter, probably also redshirts with the group that returns. Fullwood looked pretty solid, didn't really stand out a whole lot but he got to the ball and made a few tackles. The guy that stood out to me in that game that VT missed on was Darrell Taylor. Long and athletic as all get out, very good bend when turning the corner on OTs. Once he adds a little weight he's going to be a premier pass rusher. I said last year this group of DEs coming out of VA this year might produce 4 NFL guys between Sweat, Ferrell, Hill and Taylor. I though VT would land at least 2 of them. As it turns out the Hokies only get Hill at this point but they are all very talented and in the same mold, long and extremely athletic. Fulwood, Gaines and Hill all fit the scheme very well though as outside speed rushers, will be interesting to see which of them comes to practice most prepared this summer. Not sure any of the three will be physically capable of cracking the two deep. That kid Nijman, IMO, is the most likely to earn PT this season. He's legit 6'7 and having gone to FUMA, he'll be further along both physcially and academically than the summer enrollees. He's listed as DE but wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at DT. The DL class as a whole is pretty good, coaches have done great job in filling needs with this current class.
As far as the Under Armour game, thought Settle looked about average, didn't stand out to me a whole lot. Made a few plays but as with most all american games, guys aren't going to standout when their opponent is 3-4 times better than any opponent you've seen in your high school career. The standout DLs in my eyes were Daylon Mack and Canton ???, the 6'6 280 lb kid from Hawaii that is committed to Oregon. I think Settle is going to be a big time player when all is said and done but if wnats to come in early and play, which he's playing a position where that could likely happen, he's got to get his butt in better shape. He's carrying too much bad weight at 325.

Hokie nation should be happy though as the future is looking extremely bright. Class of 2014 and class of 2015 are both really talented.

A record for VT....a total of 8 four star commits. 7 was the previous

Someone may want to check this, but if Rivals will hurry up and move Nijman to a 4 star like the other recruiting websites, this would equal a total of 8 four star players for VT. VT to my knowledge, has never had a total of 8 four star players or above in one recruiting class. I recall recruiting a total of 7 four star players two times, maybe 3, but not 8. In summary, somewhat of a recruiting milestone for VT.

Now...TSL....go ahead and take my "first thought" and insert your article in the next few days here....________________.

10 SEC schools rank in top 25 recruiting classes "their terrible" LMAO

For every sheepish emotionally laden response I see about the SEC (who finally had 1 down bowl season after a decade) I will go ahead and use FACTS. I want the ACC to be the best conference in football. The ACC is not the best in football. I want the SEC to fall on its face and not be the best.

Folks, notice how when people write that the "SEC sucks" or is "overrated," they never mention what they feel is the best conference. Ever notice that? Many will say..."SEC sucks" or "Bama is overrated" or the "media loves them." LOL, but....that's the last line. The line to follow never states, "they are not the best conference" or "the Big 10 is the best or the Pac 10 or Big 12 is the best."

Folks, think with your brain for God's sake. I know, in 2015 in the USA, this is something foreign and of the past, but if you turn off the emotion, the best conference from top to bottom is not close. It really isn't very close. By the way, Bama, LSU, Auburn, even Miss and Florida and South Carolina and Tennessee....actually very young. This was the year for the SEC to be down and at the end of the day, Bama played horrible and Ohio State played perfect and it was still very close.

ACC Coastal Returning Starters Next Year-Totals for each team inside

Virginia Tech-17
Carolina-17
Rambling Wreck-15
Pittsburgh-15
UVA-14
Duke-11
Cuba-11

The above are from each teams websites and Rivals. Keep in mind, we can split hairs with the above numbers for each team if you get into the minutia of a kid who was a starter, then broke an ankle and played 4 games and the junior who replaced him started 8 games.....etc..etc. We could go on for months splitting hairs with that stuff. The above are ballpark numbers that can deviate by 1 or 2 either way. What to take of the above.......Virginia Tech, Carolina, Georgia Tech, and Pitt should be improved, but also next year's schedule for each team (do they play FSU and Clemson) and/or out of conference schedule (Ohio State) and injuries matter. UVA should be about the same and Duke and Cuba should not be quit as good. However, Miami truly is an exception because the talent is about always there regardless of whether they return 20 starters or 5 starters, and the team generally performs the same because mental toughness always enters the equation with them and their mental state always competes with or even trumps their talent.

I will give the other side of the conference in a bit and post it. By first glance...FSU and Clemson are loaded. Even with the loss of Winston, FSU is actually.......young!. That's scary.
