Bud the Bridesmaid

I think the most interesting aspect of the Fuente hire is the retention of Bud Foster as defensive coordinator.

Was "keeping Bud Foster" a deal breaker included by Babcock for any potential hire? Or ... did Fuente have to agree to keep Foster before accepting the head coach position?

I think the answer to that question is very important because it signals the amount of power Fuente has coming into a new program. Bud is great. No question. But don't you think Fuente wanted his own assistants when coming into a new job?

Also. I kinda feel bad for Bud. Dude needs to move on ...

Guys, I spoke just a little while ago with Trinity Valley CC (TX) QB Jerod Evans, who committed to VT on Saturday, while on his official visit. And I didn't realize until speaking with him that he had a hell of a week.

First off, he said that he chose the Hokies over Missouri, Central Florida and Nevada. He officially visited Nevada Dec. 4-6, went to UCF for an official Monday through Wednesday, went straight to Missouri for an official Wednesday through Friday, where he was joined by his younger brother, Caleb Evans, then flew straight from Missouri to VT with his brother for their officials.

Also, I asked about offers. He told me he had a lot of conditional offers, but not too many full offers. The UCF offer obviously stood, as I wasn't sure it did, because it came directly from Scott Frost, who also recruited him at Oregon. He said Texas, Georgia and Auburn all talked to him, but all gave him conditional offers, based on various things, such as Texas with their offensive coordinator situation. None of those were full offers.

With VT, Evans said he was hosted by wide receiver Isaiah Ford. They also hung out a lot with Cam Phillips and the official visitor he was hosting, JUCO WR Cedrick Wilson. Evans said seeing and talking with Ford and Phillips played a big role in his decision. But the biggest factor was that he liked the family aspect at VT and with the new staff. Evans was recruited directly by Justin Fuente, who offered him at Memphis. Evans said of Fuente, "He gets me."

Evans said he spoke briefly with quarterbacks Michael Brewer and Brenden Motley on his visit. And he was also told about the situation at QB with Motley and freshman Dwayne Lawson also returning. Evans said he welcomes competition, but believes that if he takes care of business he can be the starter next fall. He's already taken his finals and is waiting to graduate from JUCO this weekend. He'll be at VT next month to enroll and will participate in spring practice. He signs his letter of intent on Wednesday.

New 2017 Rivals100

Guys, the new Rivals100 was released today, as Rivals is doing its evaluations now that the 2016 season is complete for nearly every state.

Here's the link to the new Rivals100 for 2017: https://rivals.yahoo.com/virginiatech/football/recruiting/rankings/rank-rivals100/2017

And specifically where VT targets are:
No. 6: CB Lamont Wade, Clairton (Pa.) -- Gray
No. 14: CB William Poole III, Hapeville Charter (Ga.) -- Gray
No. 16: CB Shaun Wade, Trinity Christian (Fla.) -- Wiles
No. 29: RB Khalan Laborn, Ocean Lakes (Va.) -- Burden
No. 33: LB Drew Singleton, Paramus Catholic (NJ) -- Foster
No. 35: Safety Devon Hunter, Indian River (Va.) -- Burden
No. 36: RB Anthony McFarland, Dematha (Md.) -- Burden
No. 76: WR Jerry Jeudy, Deerfield Beach (Fla.) -- Wiles
No. 79: DE Chase Young, Dematha (Md.) -- Burden
No. 82: CB Deon Jones, Archbishop Carroll (DC) -- Burden
No. 89: DT Fred Hansard, Hun School (NJ) -- Foster

NOTE: This doesn't include guys who have committed elsewhere, those who have a VT offer but have specifically said they have no interest in VT or guys who the new coaches from Memphis were following but maybe didn't offer. The Tigers hadn't sent out many offers to 2017 before Fuente left.

Troy Pride Update At Shrine Bowl

Guys, former VT commit Troy Pride spoke with Rivals analyst Woody Wommack at the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. Pride decommitted from the Hokies last month but is by far one of the biggest targets still. He had an in-home visit with Justin Fuente early last week.

Pride said he's still considering VT, Notre Dame, NC State and North Carolina. He recently visited NC State officially, but has been rumored to be a Notre Dame lean for a while now.

Pride said he still plans to officially visit the Hokies next month after the current dead period, which starts today.

JUCO

I was just looking at the JUCO 100 and you see some familiar names - Alabama, S Carolina, Auburn, Oklahoma, ... SC picked up three DE in the 6'4" 270 lb range

Red Shirt first year to learn system and bulk up, then play 2. These guys are two years more mature and you have a better idea if they will continue to develop past High School.

Can get immediate help from Punter, Kicker, Return Specialist, Running Back

Other positions you red shirt or maybe find a CC that has a similar offense.

Fuente's offensive scheme

i understand they scored points at Memphis, but how does his spread actually work? What's the run/pass %. I haven't heard much about the ground game just that Lynch is a great QB. Does he burn you all kinds of ways or what? Someone with more knowledge elaborate on his electric O please. Curious how he runs it to be so dynamic. Thanks in advance. One thing I will note is that our current O line seems to be better pass blockers than run blockers for the most part. My opinion anyways. Could be wrong on that though.

Fuente or mendenhall..

We both have new coaches. I really know nothing about Fuente other than he coached memphis,in a non power 5 conference is young and apparently you guys think he is the next best thing in football. We got mendenhall who is an established coach playing against the big boys but somehow you guys think you got the better coach..can you guys explain what that is based on?just curious what leads you to believe that Fuente is that big of a coach..he may very well turn out to be so..but too me you guys are taking a shot in the dark on him.let me hear your opinions..

UVA #1......VT #2......

Just saw an article on Saturday Blitz that ranked the 19 coaching hires.....UVA and VT ranked 1st and 2nd. That is really impressive for the state of Virginia. Others of interest....Maryland ranked 12th.....South Carolina 9th....Syracuse 7th.....Georgia 4th.....Miami 3rd. ACC ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd, really good news for the ACC.
